The slogan Joy Bangla has been taken from a poem by poet Kazi Nazrul Islam.
Joy Bangla will not be considered a national slogan in Bangladesh. The Bangladeshi government led by Mohammad Yunus has recently issued an order in this regard. Bangladesh’s first President Sheikh Mujibur Rahman used this slogan commercially during Bangladesh’s independence struggle in 1971.
According to the Daily Star, the Bangladeshi Supreme Court on Tuesday has refused to stay this government order. The Supreme Court says that the national slogan is a matter of government policy and the judiciary should not interfere in it.
Let us tell you that the slogan Joy Bangla has been taken from the poem of poet Kazi Nazrul Islam. He mentioned it in a poem written during India’s independence movement in 1922. It was used as a war cry during the Bangladesh independence movement in 1971.

In 2020, the High Court had declared the national slogan
After the formation of Bangladesh, Nazrul Islam was awarded the title of National Poet of Bangladesh. Soon after the independence of Bangladesh, Joy Bangla was made the national slogan of the new country. However, when Khondakar Mustaq Ahmed became the President of Bangladesh after the assassination of Sheikh Mujib in 1975, he used the slogan Bangladesh Zindabad.
In 2017, a petition was filed in the Bangladesh High Court, demanding that Joy Bangla be declared the national slogan of the country. On March 10, 2020, the High Court declared Jai Bangla as the national slogan of the country.
On 2 March 2022, it was made mandatory by Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League government to speak it in all government offices and national functions.
Preparation to remove Sheikh Mujib’s picture from currency notes
Preparations are also being made to remove Sheikh Mujibur Rahman’s picture from Bangladeshi currency notes. According to the Dhaka Tribune, the Bangladesh Central Bank is printing new notes bearing images of the violent July protests. New bank notes of 20, 100, 500 and 1,000 taka are being printed on the instructions of the interim government.

Sheikh Mujib’s picture is being removed from four notes in Bangladesh in the initial phase. The rest will be changed in different phases.
Symbols related to the first President also attacked
Since the coup in Bangladesh in August 2024, symbols associated with Sheikh Mujib are being continuously attacked. The statue of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was vandalized in Dhaka and his nameplates installed in many public places were removed. The interim government had also canceled 8 government holidays related to independence and founding days.

Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was the first President of Bangladesh. He was also the Prime Minister of the country from 17 April 1971 to 15 August 1975.
