France recently witnessed its most serious urban violence in many years. Protests amid concerns over rising living costs, deteriorating public services and education turned into looting, arson and clashes with police in cities such as Paris, Marseille and Lyon. This violence took place after weeks of protests and student movements. The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with rising prices, poor school facilities and public services. Many businesses and public buildings were damaged, while shopkeepers complained of widespread looting.
Preparation for demonstration again on Thursday and Saturday
French authorities imposed nighttime curfews and restrictions on gatherings in parts of Paris and other cities. Prime Minister Sébastien Lecornu said these measures had helped normalize the situation, although he acknowledged shortcomings in the security system. Despite the situation calming down after the curfew, protests are planned again on Thursday and Saturday. France’s main student organization UNEF has called for new demonstrations. Groups associated with the Yellow Vest movement have also announced protests against rising fuel prices.
The government has promised to strengthen security to prevent violence like last week. At the same time, Lecornu has also talked to trade unions regarding public safety and the right to protest. Labor unions are preparing for a nationwide strike on November 5 against rising cost of living and cuts to public services.
Macron expressed displeasure over Trump’s statement
US President Donald Trump targeted immigration policies regarding the violence in France. He claimed that France was being conquered, looted and burned by ‘immigrants, jihadists and communists’. French President Emmanuel Macron criticized the comments of foreign leaders during his visit to Qatar on Wednesday. He said it was “unacceptable and foolish” for France to use violence for political gain. When asked whether his target was Trump, Macron said, ‘among others’, meaning his criticism includes the US President. Macron also accused some politicians of spreading misinformation, including AI-generated images of events that did not actually occur.
