Bombay High Court on Wednesday discharged actor Rahul Raj Singh in the suicide case of TV actress Pratyusha Banerjee. Pratyusha Banerjee got recognition from the character of Anandi in the TV show ‘Balika Vadhu’. On 1 April 2016, he was found dead in his rented flat in Goregaon, Mumbai. The court considered the last phone conversation of Pratyusha, shortly before her death on April 1, 2016, to be important. The bench of Justice SG Dige said that in the transcript of the conversation, the actress’s ex-boyfriend Rahul is seen stopping her from taking such a step. According to NDTV report, Rahul had said in the conversation that he had turned back his car and was going to meet Pratyusha. The conversation also revealed that Pratyusha was distressed and was telling many people, including her parents, about her condition. Parents had made serious allegations. Pratyusha’s parents had accused Rahul of instigating suicide, assault and mental-physical torture. Rahul was Pratyusha’s boyfriend at that time and both were in a live-in relationship. A case was registered against Rahul for instigating Pratyusha to commit suicide. The Bombay High Court had granted him anticipatory bail in July 2016. Legal battle was going on since the charge sheet. Police had filed the charge sheet in 2018. After this, Rahul filed a petition in the Sessions Court for discharge from the case. The Sessions Court rejected his petition. After this Rahul moved the Bombay High Court. What arguments did Rahul’s lawyers give? Senior advocate Aabad Ponda and advocate Shreyansh Mithare gave arguments on behalf of Rahul. He said that it is clear from the last conversation that Rahul had tried to stop Pratyusha from taking any big step. Lawyers said that Rahul was going towards Pratyusha’s flat at that time. Therefore, a case of abetment to suicide cannot be made out against him. According to Rahul’s lawyers, in the last conversation, Pratyusha was blaming many people for her situation. His parents were also included in these. The lawyers also raised the question that despite no suicide note being found, an FIR was hastily registered against Rahul. He said continuing the trial would be an ‘abuse of the legal process’. The Bombay High Court accepted Rahul’s petition and discharged him from the case. This means that there will be no trial against Rahul in this case related to Pratyusha’s death. Rahul had told about his last conversation with Pratyusha. He asked them to remain calm on the phone and spoke lovingly. According to Rahul, Pratyusha asked him to hang up the phone. After this Rahul turned his car and went back to go to them.
