Judges are also human beings. During a court hearing, a word is spoken unknowingly without any bad intention. Due to social media, controversies are created by misinterpreting such words without understanding the context, which is not right. We have to accept both the advantages and disadvantages of social media. Question: You met Dhirendra Shastri of Bageshwar Dham. There has been criticism, what will you say on this? Answer: My father R.S. Gavai was a person of secular thoughts. I have grown up in this environment since childhood. My father’s friends belonged to different religions and ideologies. These included Sharad Pawar of Congress, Uttamrao Patil of Jan Sangh and socialist thinker Bapusaheb Kaldate, all of them used to come to our house. That’s why I visit all the religious places like temple, dargah, gurudwara, mosque. I respect every religion. Dr. Ambedkar has given us secularism through the Constitution, which gives every citizen the fundamental right to ‘freedom of worship and expression’. Question: Many cases of corruption are coming to light every day in the country, is the court also not an exception to this? Answer: It is unfortunate that no institution is untouched by corruption, but compared to other sectors, the evidence of it in the judiciary is almost negligible. The judiciary itself continuously takes measures for reform. We have got this post not to wield power, but to serve the people and gain their trust. Everyone must respect the Constitution. Question: Should judges accept government or political posts after retirement? Answer: This is a personal matter, but I personally believe that if we do not expect any position from the government, then there is no pressure on our mind while working. When I became a judge in the apex court in 2019, I had decided that I would not take any government post after retirement. I wanted to strengthen and maintain my independence and that’s what I did. Question: How did you give time to your family when you were a judge, what are you doing now after retirement? Answer: He could not give time to the family while being a judge. People say that the work of judges is from 10 am to 5 pm, but they have to go to court only after studying the cases. Had to attend social programs of lawyers even on Saturday and Sunday. Likes playing tennis and swimming. Now I am fulfilling this hobby. ———————————- Also read this news… CJI Gavai said – I am very satisfied with the journey of 40 years: Said – Independence of the judiciary is the basic structure of the Constitution, retirement on 23 November.
