The Russian statement issued on Manturov’s meetings in New Delhi said that Oil And special attention was given to bilateral cooperation in the gas sector. The statement said, ‘Denis Manturov confirmed that Russian companies have the ability to continuously increase the supply of oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) to the Indian market.’
Russia’s proposal came amid rising oil prices
This statement has come at a time when there is pressure on the global energy market due to the attacks by America and Israel against Iran. Iran is retaliating by attacking American targets located in oil-rich countries of the region. It has also closed the Strait of Hormuz, important for the supply of oil and gas to the Gulf countries, which has led to a surge in global oil and gas prices.
This narrow sea route, located between the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman, is the main route for the transportation of about 20% of the world’s oil and LNG. India imports large quantities of oil and gas from the Gulf countries of the Middle East.
Since US President Donald Trump’s increasing strictness on Russian oil, India had reduced oil imports from Russia and increased oil imports from the Middle East. But due to the closure of Hormuz, there was a disruption in the supply. Seeing the rising oil prices, Trump had issued a temporary exemption to India to import oil from Russia, after which Indian refineries have started buying oil from Russia indiscriminately.
What else happened in India-Russia bilateral meeting
Various issues related to bilateral relations were discussed in the meeting of India-Russia Inter-Governmental Commission (IRIGC-TEC) on Thursday. This meeting was co-chaired by Manturov and Jaishankar Did it.
According to the Russian statement, enhancing mutually beneficial trade, investment and industrial cooperation was the main agenda of the meeting. It was said that in the current circumstances, there was discussion on preparing a way to increase bilateral trade.
Manturov said that by the end of 2025, Russia has increased the supply of fertilizers to India by 40% and is ready to meet India’s needs in future also.
Both the countries also discussed working on the decisions of the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit held in December last year.
