US President Trump has given a big statement saying that now Cuba is next. He said this during a business summit in Miami on Friday. Although Trump did not clearly state what his next step would be against Cuba, he hinted that military force could be used if needed. Trump said- I have made the American army very strong. I never thought I would have to use it, but sometimes I have to. Well Cuba is next. However, immediately after this he said – Consider that I have not said this at all. Cuba is struggling with an economic crisis. This statement of Trump has come at a time when Cuba is struggling with a deep economic crisis. After the stoppage of oil supply from Venezuela, there is a severe shortage of fuel, due to which the situation has become worse. Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro was removed following US-backed action, which cut off Cuba’s major energy supply. Trump has already said that the Cuban government is about to fall and has also talked about a ‘friendly takeover’. Earlier this month he had said that it could be a ‘friendly takeover’. He also said that he would be ‘honored’ if they took control of Cuba in some form. Speaking to reporters at the White House, he said he could liberate Cuba or take over Cuba, and he had the ability to do anything. Talks continue with Cuba: Despite saying such tough things, US officials say that the lines of dialogue are still open and talks are continuing with Cuban leaders. Cuban President Miguel Diaz-Canel has also admitted that talks are being held with America. He indicated that Cuba wants to negotiate to avoid conflict, while US pressure is increasing. Overall, Trump’s focus on Cuba shows that his foreign policy has become more aggressive and direct in messaging. America has stopped the oil supply. In fact, America is already putting pressure on Cuba. Since January, America has almost stopped the oil supply to Cuba. Other countries are also being warned not to supply oil to Cuba. Recently the US Coast Guard also stopped an oil tanker going from Colombia to Cuba. Its effect is clearly visible in Cuba. No major oil supply has reached there since January 9. The situation there is worsening rapidly. In Cuba’s black market, petrol has reached around $35 per gallon, electricity is being cut daily, there was a blackout in the entire country on Monday. Surgeries are being postponed in hospitals. There is a shortage of medicines and the problem of food is increasing. In these circumstances, pressure on the Cuban government has increased. Trump wants to create investment opportunity in Cuba. Trump’s statement also makes it clear that he is looking at Cuba not only from a political but also from a business perspective. He is already looking at the possibility of investment in this island. In 1998, his company quietly organized a tour of Cuba. Even in 2011-12, people of his organization had seen the possibilities of building a golf course there. Even during the 2016 election campaign, Trump had said that Cuba could be a good opportunity for investment. Now he said again, “They are talking to us. This is a failed country. They have no money, no oil, nothing.” America used to control Cuba after independence. After the Spanish-American War in 1898, Cuba became independent from Spain, but the real control went into the hands of America. America had a major influence on Cuba’s politics, military and economy. American companies had dominance in the land, sugar industry and business there. In 1959, revolutionary Fidel Castro, along with his guerrilla soldiers, ousted dictator Batista from power. Batista was a dictator. America itself supported Fidel Castro during the fight against him. Castro’s interviews were published in American newspapers. After gaining power, Castro made major changes. He adopted communist policy in the country. Confiscated the assets of American companies and took land and industry under government control. When the US imposed sanctions, Cuba became close to the Soviet Union. In response, the US imposed economic sanctions on Cuba. Business was closed and supply of oil and essential goods was stopped. Due to this, Cuba’s economy started deteriorating. After this Cuba turned towards the Soviet Union (Russia). Because of this, relations between America and Cuba continued to deteriorate further. The relations between these two were so bad that no American President visited Cuba for 55 years. This sequence ended in 2015 when Barack Obama went to Cuba as US President, but by then his brother Raul had taken power in Cuba in place of Fidel. America had tried 600 times to kill Castro. America considered Fidel Castro as one of its biggest enemies. According to many reports, America made more than 600 unsuccessful attempts to kill Fidel Castro in 60 years. The American intelligence agency had tried many measures to kill Fidel, from poisonous cigars to poisonous pens, although all these efforts failed. Once one of his former girlfriends also agreed to join the conspiracy to kill Fidel Castro. Under this conspiracy, a jar of poisonous cold cream was to be delivered to Castro to kill him, but Castro already got wind of it and this plan also failed. Fidel Castro died on November 25, 2016, in Havana, Cuba, at the age of 90.
