US President Donald Trump has once again claimed that the 2020 presidential election was rigged. He wrote on social media that after checking voter and citizenship records, more than 24 thousand non-American citizens were found to have cast their votes.

Trump further said that the US Census Bureau is matching voter records and citizenship records. So far 12.8 crore voters have been screened. Records of 3.2 crore more voters are yet to be verified.

The US President claimed that as the investigation progresses, the number of cases of illegal voting may increase further. He also claimed that he had won the 2020 elections. Trump said that he is going to bring ‘Save America Act’ to stop fraud in elections.

Why is Trump raising this issue?

In America, identity information has to be provided to vote in the presidential elections. However, there are no uniform rules throughout the country. Every state has its own election rules. Therefore, the documents required to cast vote also vary according to the state.

There are 15 states including Washington DC where photo ID is not required to vote. Most of these states are such where the Democratic Party wins the elections.

Trump and his party leaders allege that in states where photo ID is not mandatory, there is a risk of voting in someone else’s name or of non-citizens voting. That’s why they are demanding strict identity and citizenship checks.

Trump is gathering support for Save America Act

Donald Trump has raised the issue of alleged illegal voting by 24 thousand non-citizens at a time when he is gathering support for the Save America Act. If this law is passed, it will be mandatory to provide proof of citizenship at the time of voter registration.

Trump and his supporters say that this will prevent voting by non-citizens and make the electoral process more secure.

Trump lost the presidential election in 2020

Joe Biden won the 2020 presidential election in America. He defeated the then President Trump. In this election, Biden got 8.1 crore votes, while Trump got 7.4 crore votes.

Biden got 306 votes while Trump got 232 votes in the Electoral College. There the result of the presidential election is decided only by the electoral vote.

Every state gets a certain number of electoral votes based on its population and its representation in Parliament. There are 538 electoral votes in America including all the states. To become President, a candidate needs 270 votes.

For example, if a candidate receives the most votes in a state, that candidate generally receives all the electoral votes in that state.
