US President Donald Trump signed an executive order on Friday. In this, tariffs on dozens of agricultural products including beef, coffee and fruits have been removed. Inflation is being said to be the main reason behind this.

This decision comes after the Democratic Party’s victory in the elections held in Virginia and New Jersey earlier this month. Inflation and high prices were the biggest issues for voters in this election.

According to the Trump administration, this step has been taken to stabilize the prices of products. The burden of the tariffs imposed on these was falling directly on the consumers. Beef, coffee, tea, fruit juice, cocoa, spices, bananas, oranges, tomatoes and some fertilizer products are included in the tariff free category.

related to agricultural products Decision to increase imports

In the past months, there was a continuous increase in the prices of many food products, including beef. In April, Trump had imposed tariffs on many countries.

His administration claimed that these did not increase consumer prices. But the result was the opposite. Tariffs on major beef exporting countries like Brazil were blamed for this.

The decision came on the heels of agreements with Ecuador, Guatemala, El Salvador and Argentina. This will reduce the import tax on agricultural products from these countries. This week, Trump had hinted at reducing tariffs on coffee, so that imports could increase.

Mexico is America’s largest agricultural partner

America’s largest agricultural trading partner in 2025 is Mexico, which is at the top in terms of both exports and imports.

According to data from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), the US exported a record $30.3 billion of agricultural products to Mexico in 2024, up 7% from 2023.

In terms of total trade value, Mexico imported $41.6 billion to the US on average over 2020-24, accounting for about 25% of all agricultural imports, while Canada came in second with $35 billion.

Main exports include corn ($5.51 billion), pork, dairy products, soybeans and poultry, while imports include tomatoes, avocados, berries and vegetables.

Because of the USMCA (United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement), tariffs on most Mexican products are zero, making trade easier and faster. Exports are up 65% in the last four years.

Trump had imposed tariffs on more than 100 countries

Trump had announced the imposition of tariffs on countries around the world in the joint session of the US Parliament on March 5. He had said that our economy is continuously going into losses. To avoid this loss, we will impose tariffs on all those countries who impose tariffs on our goods.

About a month later, on April 2, President Trump had announced the imposition of tariffs on 69 countries including India. It was scheduled to come into effect from April 9, but Trump then postponed it. Later on July 31, Trump imposed tariffs on more than 100 countries, which came into full effect in August.

India is not ready to take milk from non-vegetarian cows

There is a dispute between India and America regarding dairy products. America wants its dairy products like milk, cheese, ghee to be allowed to be imported into India. India is the largest milk producing country in the world and crores of small farmers are engaged in this sector.

The Indian government fears that if American dairy products come to India, they could cause huge losses to local farmers. Apart from this, religious sentiments are also attached.

In America, enzymes made from animal bones (such as rennet) are added to the food of cows to provide better nutrition. India considers the milk of such cows as ‘non-veg milk’ i.e. non-vegetarian milk.

India has a condition that any dairy product can be sold in India only if it proves that it is made in a completely vegetarian manner.

South Korea: Rice and beef markets not opened

America has imposed 15% tariff on South Korea. However, South Korea has not opened the rice and beef markets in the interest of its farmers. South Korea has banned the import of beef from American cattle older than 30 months.

The reason for this is mad cow disease. It is believed that this disease occurs in older cattle. Despite this ban, South Korea is still the largest buyer of American beef. In 2024, it had purchased American meat worth about $2.22 billion.

Apart from this, there are also strict rules on genetically modified crops. The Korean Farmers Union and Hanwoo Association had warned the government not to sacrifice its farmers under American pressure.

Switzerland: High tax on dairy and meat

Switzerland imposes very high taxes on its agricultural products, such as dairy and meat, so that local farmers are protected. Due to this, it is difficult for foreign products to enter the market.

In Switzerland, about 25% of the country’s agriculture comes from dairy. Here the government helps in purchasing crops from farmers, so that they can continue farming and at the same time the environment is also protected.

Iceland: High tax on foreign products

Iceland is among those countries which have not made agreements with foreign countries regarding dairy products and agriculture.

Iceland also heavily subsidizes its agricultural and dairy products and imposes high taxes on foreign products, so that local farmers remain protected. The market for foreign products has been limited.

The government provides financial assistance and subsidies to local farmers, so that they can continue farming and the food security of the country is maintained.
