Rukmini Vasanth’s father, Colonel Vasanth Venugopal, was an officer in the Indian Army. He was the commanding officer of the 9th Battalion, Maratha Light Infantry. On July 31, 2007, he was leading the operation against terrorists in Uri sector of Jammu and Kashmir. A group of terrorists was trying to enter India through the Line of Control. Rukmini had told in her interview that about 8 terrorists were involved in this operation. The army killed all the terrorists, but Colonel Vasant and his radio operator were martyred in the encounter. For his bravery he was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra. According to Rukmini, Colonel Vasanth was the first army officer from Karnataka to receive the Ashoka Chakra. Father was very special for her daughter. Rukmini has talked about her father on many occasions while remembering him. He told that the father was a very loving person, but was also completely dedicated as a soldier. Colonel Vasant believed that an officer should lead his men from the forefront. With this same thinking, he used to lead his team in operations also. Rukmini was only 10 years old at that time. Subhashini is a Bharatanatyam dancer. About six months after her husband’s martyrdom, she started ‘Vasantaratna Foundation for Art’. Its objective is to help the families of martyred soldiers and their widows. Rukmini had told that her father used to regularly meet the families of martyred soldiers. He used to visit their homes, spend time with the family and try to understand their problems. Many times Subhashini also used to accompany him. After her father’s death, Subhashini decided to carry forward this work. After Ashok Chakra, there was a struggle for compensation. After the martyrdom of Colonel Vasant, the family had to go through another struggle. There was a provision to give land as compensation to the family of the Ashok Chakra winner, but to get it, Subhashini had to visit government offices several times. Under the Karnataka Government order of 1971, there was a provision to give Rs 1.25 lakh or two acres of irrigated land to the family of the person receiving the Ashoka Chakra. Many years later, Subhashini raised questions on this rule. He said that this amount was very less in the era of rising inflation and there was a need to change the rules. In an interview given to ‘The New Indian Express’ in 2016, he had told that repeatedly going to government officials for his rights was a very difficult experience for him. Rukmini is carrying forward her father’s legacy. After the martyrdom of Colonel Vasant, her family continued the work of helping soldiers and their families. Rukmini made her mark in the world of acting. Today she is one of the popular actresses of Kannada cinema and is seen in Yash’s film ‘Toxic: A Fairy Tale for Grown-ups’.
