Sanei Takaichi, leader of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP), was elected Prime Minister in the lower house of Parliament on Tuesday.
Japan’s Sanae Takaichi was elected Prime Minister of the country on Tuesday. She is the first female Prime Minister of Japan. Takaichi won the elections in the lower house of parliament by 237 votes against 149.
After the lower house, he was also elected to the upper house, where after falling one vote short of the majority in the first round, he won by 125–46 votes in the second vote. After becoming PM, world leaders like Modi and Trump have congratulated Takaichi.
Takaichi has become Prime Minister with a weak coalition. She is a supporter of the late former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and advocates a strong military, stricter immigration policies, and amendments to Japan’s pacifist constitution.
Earlier this month, Takaichi was elected leader of the LDP. Takaichi had also tried to become PM in 2021 and 2024 but then he could not get the support of that many MPs.

Takaichi Shinzo, close to Abe, anti-China leader
Takaichi will replace PM Shigeru Ishiba. The party had to face defeat in the upper house elections held in July. After this, opposition to Ishiba increased in the party.
LDP has chosen Takaichi at a time when people in the country are angry over inflation and have started supporting opposition parties.
Takaichi is considered close to former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. Shinzo was the longest serving PM of Japan. He is considered an anti-China leader.
Takaichi is a supporter of the rule of a male king in the country, as well as being against the queen assuming office and ruling.

Opponent of trade deal with Trump

- The men in the country are in favor of having a king and are against the rule of the queen.
- There has been a demand to tighten the rules for foreigners coming to Japan. He believes that action should be taken against people coming illegally.
- Opposes keeping separate titles in the names of married couples.

Divorced husband in 2017, came back together after 4 years
Sanae Takaichi married Taku Yamamoto, an MP from her own party, in 2004. But in July 2017, both of them got divorced due to political differences.
At that time, the news of their separation was widely discussed in the media. However, after 4 years, in December 2021, both of them got married again.
Subsequently, Taku Yamamoto changed his surname to Takaichi.
