Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar met Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow on Thursday. After this, he said in a joint press conference that India is not the largest buyer of Russian oil.
Jaishankar said that India is not the largest buyer of Russian oil, but is China. Russian LNG’s largest buyer is the European Union. At the same time, some southern countries are ahead of us in increasing trade with Russia after 2022.
US President Trump has imposed an additional 25% tariff on India due to buying Russian oil, which will be applicable from August 27. Trump alleges that India’s buying oil is helping Russia fight Ukraine Jung.

Both countries will also work on reducing trade deficit
Jaishankar justified the purchase of Russia oil based on India’s needs. He said that India and Russia’s relationship has been one of the most stable relationships in the world after the second world war. “
The two countries agreed to increase agriculture, medicine and textile import to Russia from India to balance trade. Jaishankar said that India and Russia will work to remove non-tariff problems in trade and resolve regulations problems soon. This will increase India’s import and reduce trade deficit (trade imbalance).

India is getting 5% discount on Russian oil purchase
Russian Diplomat Roman Babushkin said on a day ago i.e. Wednesday that there is no alternative to Russia’s crude oil, because it is very cheap.
He had said- India is getting a discount of about 5% on Russian crude oil. India understands that there is no option to change the oil supply, because it is making a lot of profit. Russia has also denied American pressure on India.
India is the largest buyer of Russian oil after China. Before the Ukraine War, India used to import only 0.2% (68 thousand barrels per day) from Russia. By May 2023 it increased to 45% (2 million barrels per day), while India is buying 17.8 lakh barrels of oil from Russia every day from January to July in 2025.
For the last two years, India has been buying more than $ 130 billion (Rs 11.33 lakh crore) every year.

India will continue to buy oil from Russia
Babushkin said- This is a challenging situation for India, but we trust our relations with India. We are confident that despite external pressure, India will continue to buy oil from Russia. He also said that if Indian goods cannot go to the US market, they can go towards Russia.
The issue of Indian working in Russian army also raised the issue
Jaishankar raised the issue of Indians working in the Russian Army in a meeting with Sergei Lavarov. He said that many Indians have been released, but some such cases still remain.
