This will be the third time Modi will meet Zelensky after the Russia-Ukraine war. They have previously met in Japan in May 2023 and in Italy in June 2024.
Prime Minister Modi is going to Ukraine today, two and a half years after the start of the Russia-Ukraine war. He will reach Ukraine after a 10-hour train journey from Poland. During this visit, Prime Minister Modi will spend 7 hours in the Ukrainian capital, Kiev.
This is the first time that an Indian Prime Minister is visiting Ukraine. No Indian Prime Minister has visited Ukraine since Ukraine was formed in 1991 due to the collapse of the Soviet Union.
This visit of PM Modi is also special because since 24 February 2022, when Russia attacked Ukraine, no leader of any country other than NATO countries has visited Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Zelensky had invited PM Modi to visit Ukraine a few months ago. Earlier, Modi and Zelensky met for the first time after the war during the G-7 summit in Japan in May 2023.
Modi said- problems cannot be solved in the battlefield
Before visiting Ukraine, PM Modi was on a 2-day visit to Poland on 21 and 22 August. During this, he also held a bilateral meeting with Poland’s PM Donald Tusk on Thursday.
In a joint press conference of both the countries after the meeting, PM Modi said that the solution to the Ukraine crisis cannot come from the battlefield.
He said that the loss of lives of innocent people in any crisis has become the biggest challenge for humanity. PM Modi talked about finding a solution to the Ukraine crisis through dialogue and diplomacy.

PM Modi became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Poland in 45 years.
Earlier, during his visit to Russia in July, Modi had also called for a solution to the Ukraine war through dialogue. He had told Putin that India is ready to cooperate in every possible way in restoring peace.
Modi had said, “When innocent children are killed, when we see innocent children dying, it is heart wrenching. That pain is very big. I also had a detailed discussion with Putin on this.”
However, despite the war continuing for the last two and a half years, India has never made any statement against Russia nor has it supported any action against Russia.

Zelensky had criticized PM Modi’s visit to Russia
PM Modi’s visit to Ukraine today is also special because he had visited Russia only last month. At the beginning of this visit, Prime Minister Modi had met Russian President Vladimir Putin over a private dinner. During this meeting, the two leaders had informal talks on various issues including the Ukraine war.
Modi’s visit was criticized by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. Zelensky had said that Modi’s visit has dealt a blow to peace efforts. He posted on X saying that it is shameful for the leader of the world’s largest democracy to hug the world’s biggest murderer.
PM Modi’s visit comes amid Ukrainian backlash against Russia
PM Modi has gone on a visit to Ukraine at a time when Ukraine has started a counterattack against Russia. Ukraine surprised the world by intruding into Russia’s Kursk region. Ukraine captured 1263 square km of Russian territory in two weeks.
Ukraine claims that it has captured more land in 2 weeks than Russia captured in 8 months of 2024. With this, Ukraine has told the world that Russia cannot win this war unilaterally.
