Just before the Assam Assembly elections, Congress has suffered another major setback. Nagaon Lok Sabha MP and former minister Pradyut Bordoloi has resigned from the party. Sources say that he may soon join BJP, which may change the political equation of the state.
He wrote a letter to party president Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress Has announced his resignation. Pradyut wrote in his letter, with extreme sadness, I today tender my resignation from all posts, privileges and primary membership of the Indian National Congress.
Bordoloi’s leaving the Congress is being considered a big blow to the party, especially in Nagaon and its surrounding areas. He has deep penetration among grassroots level workers and voters. Although Bordoloi has not yet officially confirmed his next move, sources say that BJP is active in getting him in its fold. If he formally joins BJP, the electoral equation in Nagaon region can completely change.
Pradyut Bordoloi for decades Assam Has been a prominent face of Congress. He started his career as MLA from Margherita seat in 1998. After this, he held many important ministerial posts in the Assam government between 2001 and 2015. He was considered one of the strongest pillars of the Congress in Upper Assam, playing a big role in both organization and governance. In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, he contested from Nagaon seat on Congress ticket and won with a huge vote. Since then he is holding the post of Nagaon Lok Sabha MP.
At present, the Congress party has not issued any official statement on the resignation of its veteran leader. On the other hand, BJP leaders are also maintaining silence on this development and have neither denied nor confirmed the news of Bordoloi’s involvement. As elections are approaching, Bordoloi’s move is expected to accelerate the process of political party-switching in Assam, making the contest even more interesting and uncertain.
