The picture is on 2 May. When Kedaranath Yatra began.

The Union Ministry of Roads and Transport is preparing to build a 7 km long tunnel to Kedarnath. If everything goes well, then in the coming 4-5 years, there will be two ways to reach Kedarnath temple.

One of these routes will reach the temple directly in every season. Currently, the walk from Gaurikund to Rambada-Lincholi to Kedar Dham is 16 km long. However, it will survive only 5 km after the tunnel is formed.

In fact, taking lessons from the tragedy of 2013 and July 2024, the Center has started work on the plan to build a new safe path to Kedarnath Temple. For this, the Ministry has conducted a preliminary survey of the mountain through a consultant.

There is a plan to build a stop to Lincholi (10 thousand feet), which falls five km before the Kedarnath temple, the last village of Kalimath Valley, 6562 feet above the Tunnel Uttarakhand. There is a paved road till Chaumasi. You can go here by car. Then there will be a tunnel and 5 km walk from Lincholi to the temple.

Now this is the way

  • The track is currently 16 km. Rambara is 9 km from Gaurikund, Licholi 2 km from Rambada and 5 km from Lincholi.

Future route

  • Rudraprayag Gaurikund reaches Kalimath, Kotma and then Chaumasi via Kunda on the National Highway. Chaumasi is 41 km from the pool.
  • Chaumasi to 7 km long tunnel will deliver lyncholi. Then the temple 5 km from Lincholi.

Not a landslide zone on the new path, more secure than old

According to Mukesh Parmar, Chief Engineer of National Highway Uttarakhand, the consultant has surveyed the tunnel. The team of central officers is finalizing it. The path of Kalimath is cut off from Guptkashi.

In September last year, a five-member team conducted a ground survey of Chaumasi-Kham Bugyal-Kedarnath route. Then the team had said that there are no landslide zones anywhere on this whole route. There are rigid rocks and the path can be made from the top and bottom of the bugs. Undergraduate water is leaking in many places, which can be measured.

Tunnel was to be built from Rambada first, but the area is weak

Former MLA of Kedarnath Shailarani Rawat had demanded PM Narendra Modi to construct Gaurikund-Rambada-Choumasi motorway on 21 October 2022, then the Rudraprayag district administration kept the proposal to build a tunnel till Rambada, but where the tunnel would be built, it was not decided. Rambada is a landslide zone, so the road here is not possible.

The most difficult walk on Kedarnath

Kedarnath is the most difficult tour of the four dhams. There is always a danger here. Even after the tragedy of 16-17 June 2013, there have been obstacles from time to time. On July 31 last year, the yatra was stopped due to heavy rains on the Kedarnath route. Soon after, on August 4, a terrible landslide took place here, 15,000 passengers were trapped and 5 passengers were killed.
