‘When I went to my in-laws’ house after marriage, Tantra-Mantra puja was started in the house after midnight. Mother-in-law said that this puja has brought wealth to the house and one has to participate in it. For this everyone takes off their clothes and sits. When I refused, my husband and father-in-law forcefully removed my clothes. After this I was locked in the room, where I was misbehaved. Then I was made to sit in the puja in the same condition. During this time I was also beaten up. Later, pressure was put on me to bring two crore rupees and one kg of gold.
A girl from Kanpur has made these serious allegations in her complaint lodged with the police. This matter related to harassment, coercion and demand of dowry in the name of Tantra-Mantra is now under police investigation. After the FIR lodged in the women’s police station, the police have made many people from the in-laws side accused. The daughter of an affluent family of Sachendi area of Kanpur was married on 6 March 2024 in the Mishra family resident of Pandu Nagar. According to the family, the wedding took place with much pomp and show and around Rs 5 crore was spent on it. The victim says that initially everything seemed normal, but after a few days the atmosphere at the in-laws’ house started changing. At night, activities related to puja, recitation and tantra-mantra started in the house, in which he was also asked to participate.
Midnight Puja and Rules
According to the victim, for the first time she was woken up after midnight and asked to attend the puja. She told that her mother-in-law said that the family’s wealth and business progressed due to this type of puja. This is how millionaires have become, the mother-in-law described herself as connected to Kolkata and said that she has been regularly going to Tantra-Mantra puja there too. The victim alleges that to participate in the puja, she was told such rules which she could not accept. He opposed this and clearly said that there is no such tradition in his family.
Pressure increased after protest
The victim said that when she refused to participate in these activities, the pressure on her was increased. He says that instead of convincing him, he was forced to do so. She alleged that her husband and father-in-law forced her and she was forced to do so. She also said that she was locked in a room and misbehaved with her.

He told that when he protested, he was hit with slippers and was told that there was some influence on him, which needed to be cured. The victim says that these incidents had a mental impact on her and she could not become normal for a long time. The victim alleges that this was not a one-time incident. He told that similar pujas were held regularly at home and every time he was asked to participate in it. She says that whenever she refused, she was scolded and pressurized.
Even husband did not support
The victim has also made serious allegations against her husband. She says that when she asked her husband for help, he did not support her. According to the victim, her husband always obeyed his parents and asked her to do the same. The victim has also alleged that her in-laws started demanding additional dowry after the marriage. He said that he was asked to bring two crore rupees and one kg of gold. According to the victim, her father had already spent a huge amount on the wedding and it was not possible to fulfill such a demand.

Fed up with the continuous incidents, the victim finally decided to leave her in-laws’ house. In January 2025, she returned to her maternal home and told the whole story to her family. Based on his statement, the family members contacted the police and demanded action. The victim says that the FIR was not registered immediately after the complaint. He alleged that efforts were made to reach an agreement for several months and both the parties were called for talks. However, a settlement could not be reached and ultimately the police registered a case.
Who was made the accused in the FIR?
In the report lodged in Mahila police station, husband, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother-in-law and other family members have been made accused. The police have registered a case under various sections and started investigation. In the case, ACP Ashutosh Singh said that an FIR has been registered on the basis of the complaint of the victim. He said that all the allegations are being investigated and whatever facts emerge, further action will be taken accordingly.
In-laws’ side did not come forward
An attempt was made to contact the in-laws in this matter, but their side could not be heard. The family members were not at home and their shop was also closed. At present the police is investigating the entire matter. Evidence is being collected to confirm the allegations made in the complaint and the people concerned can be interrogated.
