A large chunk of rocks fell in a stone mine in Dhenkanal district of Odisha. According to the police, the accident happened on Saturday evening, when some workers were doing drilling and stone extraction work in a mine near Gopalpur village. According to local media reports, 4 laborers have died in the accident. While some are still stranded.
The fire service officer running the rescue operation said that fire service teams, Odisha Disaster Rapid Action Force (ODRAF) teams, dog squads and machines engaged in rescue operations have been sent to the area.
Reports also said that the mine did not have permission to carry out the blast. The District Mining Office had issued a notice to the leaseholder on September 8, 2025, directing him to close the mine.

Collector said – 2 dead bodies found so far
Dhenkanal Collector Ashish Ishwar Patil said that two bodies have been recovered so far. The rescue operation started at 7 am on Sunday which is still going on. One of the dead may be from Balasore and the other may be from Mayurbhanj or Keonjhar. The complete identity has not been confirmed yet. Even after the lease expired, he continued mining operations. Legal action will be taken against illegal mining.
