There is good news for India before the 98th Oscar Awards. Four Indian films including Rishabh Shetty’s film ‘Kantara: A Legend-Chapter 1’, Anupam Kher’s film ‘Tanvi the Great’ are in the race for the Best Film Award at Oscars 2026. There is competition between a total of 201 films in this category.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has announced this. The Academy on Thursday released The Reminder List of Production Eligible for the 98th Academy Awards. The nominations will be announced on January 22.

Apart from Rishabh Shetty’s ‘Kantara’ and Anupam Kher’s Tanvi, two other Indian productions, multi-lingual animated film ‘Mahavatar Narasimha’ and Tamil film ‘Tourist Family’ have also been included. ‘Tourist Family’ has been directed by Abhishan Jeevinth. This is his first film.

Radhika Apte starrer Hindi language film ‘Sister Midnight’ has also been included in this list. This film has been jointly produced by a UK-India production company.

It has been told by the Academy that a total of 317 feature films are eligible for the 98th Academy Awards. Of these, 201 films meet the additional eligibility criteria required for consideration in the Best Film category.

Being included in the reminder list does not guarantee nomination. The films must still go through the Academy’s voting process.

To be eligible in the General Entry category, films must be released in theaters in any one of six US metropolitan areas: Los Angeles County, New York City, Bay Area, Chicago, Dallas-Fort Worth and Atlanta between January 1 and December 31, 2025. Also, they must be shown in the same theater for at least seven consecutive days.

To be considered for Best Film consideration, films must meet general eligibility criteria as well as submit a confidential Academy Representation and Inclusion Standard Entry (RAISE) form. Additionally, they are also required to meet at least two of the Academy’s four inclusion standards.

Expectations from Neeraj Ghaywan’s film Homebound also

In December 2025, the Academy released Oscar shortlists for 12 categories, including International Feature Film. Neeraj Ghaywan’s film ‘Homebound’, which is India’s official entry for the Academy Awards this year, has joined the shortlist of 15 films in the category.

Awards will be given in a total of 24 categories at the 98th Oscar ceremony to be held on March 15. There are five nominations in each category except Best Film, while Best Picture has 10 nominations.

In the year 2025, the Academy had announced the list of 323 feature films eligible for the 97th Academy Awards, which included 11 Indian films.

These included Payal Kapadia’s ‘All We Imagine as Light’, Shuchi Talati’s ‘Girls Will Be Girls’, Kiran Rao’s ‘Missing Ladies’ and Randeep Hooda starrer ‘Swatantra Veer Savarkar’.
