Houthi rebels fired on the Sonia on August 21 in the Red Sea from two boats. The firing caused a fire on the ship. Due to the fire and repeated attacks by Houthi rebels, the crew on board the tanker was rescued.

After this, Houthi rebels attacked the ship again. This time they boarded the ship and blasted it by planting explosives in it. The spokesperson of the Houthi group in Yemen has posted the video of the attack on the social media platform X.

The risk of oil spill in the sea increased
The blast that occurred after the Houthi rebels attacked the oil tanker has created a risk of oil spillage in the sea. This tanker is carrying more than 1.5 lakh tonnes or 10 lakh barrels of crude oil. However, the European Union said that there has been no oil spill from the Sonia so far.

There were 25 crew members from Philippines and Russia on the tanker and 4 other security guards. They were rescued by a French warship and left in Djibouti.

On Saturday, the US State Department expressed concern about the attacks on Sonia in a statement. At the same time, the US has warned about the possibility of the largest oil spill ever.

Earlier in 1989, 2 lakh 57 thousand barrels of oil had leaked from the Exxon Valdez ship in the Gulf of Alaska.

A cloud of smoke was seen rising from the fire on the ship after the attack by Houthi rebels.
