On August 12, 1997, T-Series founder Gulshan Kumar was shot dead outside the Shiva temple. After a long time, police officer Rakesh Maria has told that a month before the murder of Gulshan Kumar, he had received a tip from the informer about a conspiracy to murder, after which he had called Mahesh Bhatt and asked him to tell Gulshan Kumar not to leave the house. After this warning, Gulshan Kumar was given police protection, but then he was murdered after a month.

Rakesh Maria said in Raj Shamani’s podcast, ‘While working in the crime branch, I had developed a good informer network in cases like bomb blasts etc. 22 April 1996, late at night I got a call. At that time there were no mobile phones, the call came on landline. The person said to me, “Sir, Gulshan Kumar is about to lose his wicket.” I asked, “Who is going to go to the wicket?” Then he told that “Abu Salim is going to get this done. He (Gulshan Kumar) goes to the Shiv temple, and as soon as he comes out, these people will kill him.”

Rakesh Maria further said, I said, “If you know anything else, please tell me.” This call must have come around 2-3 in the night. I did not sleep. My wife also saw the expression on my face and asked, “What happened?” She was used to all these things, had seen this happening to me before too. I said, “Nothing. They are going to kill someone.” So he said in a very casual manner, “Why don’t you inform someone about this?” I said, “Yes, I will.” Around 6:30-7 in the morning, I called Mahesh Bhatt. I asked him, “Do you know Gulshan Kumar?” He said, “Yes, I am directing a film for him.” I said, “You tell them not to leave the house today. If they go to the Shiva temple, stop them. I am talking to the crime branch, they will be given security.”

Rakesh Maria further said, ‘After some time I got a call back from Mahesh Bhatt. He said, “Yes, he goes to Shiva temple every day.” I then said, “Tell them not to leave the house today.” I also spoke to the crime branch.

Rakesh Maria told that he informed this to the Crime Branch and then Gulshan Kumar was given security. Rakesh Maria further says, ‘I called there and told that something very serious is going to happen, security should be provided immediately. Security was also given to him. After that I forgot about it. Then in August it was revealed that Gulshan Kumar was shot outside the Shiv temple. I was left stunned.’

‘I said, “What happened? He was given security.” Then information was received that Mumbai Police had given security, but he had a big factory in Noida, Super Cassettes or whatever, he lived under the protection of UP Police in Noida. There was security for a long time, but what happens is that people start thinking, “We were told about the danger in April, now it’s August, nothing has happened.” Then laziness sets in, carelessness starts.

Rakesh further said, ‘I think there was some festival, maybe Holi or some other festival. So his bodyguards etc. said that he was going on leave. So he (Gulshan Kumar) also said, “Okay, now there is nothing.” And he came there (temple) without any guard and was murdered there.
