Air India flight AI2812 going from Mumbai to Bengaluru returned to Mumbai airport about 20 minutes after taking off on Thursday. Officials said the pilot gave a ‘PAN PAN’ call on the radio after one of the engines shut down in the air, after which the flight was landed safely on priority basis.
In fact, in aviation emergency protocol, this call is considered one level below ‘MAYDAY’. This means that the situation is serious and needs immediate help, but there is no immediate life-threatening situation.
According to media reports, a loud noise was heard during takeoff and sparks were also seen. The flight was scheduled to take off at 2:05 am but it took off at around 2:30 am. According to officials, a technical glitch was experienced just minutes after takeoff. Passengers also reported feeling something unusual during takeoff.
Officials said that after landing, the aircraft concerned were stopped for further flight and a detailed technical investigation has been started. The second flight operated in its place took off for Bengaluru at around 4:45 am.
What is ‘PAN PAN’?
‘PAN PAN’ in aviation emergency communications highlights a situation in which an aircraft has a serious technical or operational problem, but the situation is not immediately life-threatening. Following such a call, air traffic control gives landing clearance to the aircraft on priority basis and emergency services are alerted.
