Amid growing Israel-Iran tension in the Middle East, people in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are abandoning their pet dogs, cats and other animals on the streets or in shelters in preparation to leave the country.
According to rescue organizations, people are leaving animals tied to poles on the road in the scorching heat without food or water. Animal welfare workers say they have also found cats and puppies locked in cages outside homes or shelters.
Abu Dhabi’s animal welfare worker Enso Stander called it a selfish and cruel move. He also said two abandoned dogs had been reported shot in the area near his shelter.
