During the shooting of Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi’s film in Haridwar, a dispute broke out over the bar and restaurant scene. As soon as some Hindu organizations and pilgrimage priests in Haridwar came to know about the set up of bar and restaurant, they reached the spot. After this, strong protests started there. In view of the growing opposition, the film unit and the house operators had to remove the word “bar” from the board, after which the matter was calmed down. The people doing the shooting did not disclose which film was being shot. There has been no reaction from the actor’s side regarding the matter yet. Videos of the incident have also surfaced, in which people are seen arguing and pushing the film makers. See pictures – How the controversy started is of Bhatiya Bhawan located in Shravanath Nagar, Haridwar, where the shooting of Bollywood actor Emraan Hashmi’s film was going on for the last few days. Late on Wednesday night, a board saying “Bar and Restaurant” was put up outside the house for the shooting of a scene of the film. As soon as the information about this was received, the local people reached the spot and started protesting. The protesting people said that Haridwar is a world famous pilgrimage city, where crores of devotees come with their faith. In such a situation, putting up a bar board inside the city is a step that hurts religious sentiments. People alleged that in the name of shooting of films, efforts are being made to harm the religious and cultural identity of Haridwar. The debate continued till late night. As the protest increased, the debate between businessmen, social workers, building operators and film unit members continued till late night. People clearly said that no compromise with the dignity and decorum of Dharmanagari will be accepted. Ultimately, under the pressure of protest, the word “Bar” was removed from the board, after which the matter was calmed down. Kashish Bhatia, president of Maa Ganga Vyapar Mandal, said that he had received information that a board of “Bar and Restaurant” had been put up outside the building. He said that Haridwar is a holy pilgrimage site, where meat and liquor are prohibited. In such a situation, it is not appropriate to install such a board even for shooting. He said that respecting public sentiments, the word “Bar” was removed from the board. Social worker Karan Pandit said that the holy bank of Mother Ganga is situated at a short distance from the place where the board was installed. He said that any kind of tampering with the religious identity and faith of Haridwar will not be tolerated. Be it a film producer or a person associated with a big industry, the dignity of Dharmanagari is paramount. Pilgrimage priests also raised questions. Pilgrimage priest Ujjwal Pandit said that it is the responsibility of every citizen to maintain the sanctity of Haridwar. He said that the board was removed only due to people’s protest and this is the result of the awareness of the city residents. He warned that in future too, if anyone tries to harm the religious identity of Haridwar, he will be opposed. During the entire controversy it was not clear which film was being shot. People associated with the film unit only said that they had permission to shoot, but the name of the film was not made public. It is being told that the artist and technical team from Mumbai has reached Haridwar for the shooting. After this incident, the debate has once again started as to how much care should be taken of local traditions, beliefs and public sentiments while filming in religious and culturally sensitive areas.
