Voting for parliamentary elections will start in Israel today at 7 am (9:30 am Indian time). This time, instead of Netanyahu, former army chief Gadi Eiseenkot is the biggest contender for the post of Prime Minister.

In four out of six opinion polls, Eisecoat’s alliance has been given more seats. Whereas Netanyahu’s alliance has got lead in one poll and majority in another poll.

There are a total of 120 seats in the Israeli Parliament. At least 61 seats are required to form the government. In the 76-year history of Israel, till date no political party has achieved majority alone.

The party with more votes gets more seats.

In Israel, people do not vote for any leader, but for his party. Before the elections, every party prepares a list of its candidates. On the basis of votes received by the party in the entire country, it is decided how many seats it will get in the Parliament.

But there is a condition to get a seat in Parliament. A party has to secure at least 3.25% of the total valid votes. If the party gets less votes than this, it does not get any seat in the Parliament.

Which candidates of the party will become MPs is decided from the list of candidates. Every party releases a list of its candidates before the elections. If a party gets 20 seats, then the first 20 candidates in the list will become MPs.

4 big issues in elections…

1. Investigation of October 7 Hamas attack: On October 7, 2023, Hamas attacked Israel. The Israeli army and intelligence agencies had failed to stop this attack.

Even after three years, the government has not formed a commission to investigate how such a huge mistake happened. The opposition alleges that the government failed to stop this attack and it should take responsibility for it.

2. Controversy regarding army recruitment: Most Jews in Israel are required to serve in the army. After Israel was created in 1948, 400 people from the Haredi community were exempted from military conscription to study in Jewish institutions.

Its purpose was to preserve the studies and traditions of religious scholars. But gradually the scope of exemption increased. There is controversy in Israel today regarding this exemption.

People from other communities say that when the country is at war, everyone should serve in the army. Netanyahu gets votes from the people of the Haredi community. In such a situation, they want to maintain this exemption.

At the same time, Gadi Eiseenkot’s stance is different from Netanyahu. They want people from the Haredi community to also join the army or civil service.

The population of the Haredi community in Israel has reached about 1 million. This is approximately 13% of the total population.

3. Attempt to reduce the power of the Supreme Court: Before the war in Gaza started, the Netanyahu government had tried to reduce the power of the Supreme Court. This issue is still a major cause of conflict between the Netanyahu government and its opponents.

4. Country’s security and when will the war end: Netanyahu had promised complete victory against Hamas, but Hamas and Lebanon’s Hezbollah are still active.

Netanyahu-Eisenkot both lost families in the war

Netanyahu: Worked in army commando unit

Netanyahu joined the Israeli Army in 1967. He served in the army’s elite special forces unit ‘Sayret Matkal’. This unit is known for intelligence operations and special military operations like hostage rescue.

Netanyahu was also involved in the rescue of hostages after the Sabena Airlines plane was hijacked in 1972.

Netanyahu’s elder brother Yonatan was killed in 1976 during a hostage-free operation in Entebbe, Uganda. He was leading this campaign.

Aizenkot: From common soldier to army chief

Aizencott began his career in 1978 as a private soldier in the Golani Brigade. After nearly 38 years of service, he became the Army Chief of Israel in 2015. He remained on this post till 2019.

As Army Chief, he took responsibility for major decisions related to army strategy and security. The military strategy associated with his name is called the ‘Eisenkot Doctrine’.

Eiseenkot’s son Gaal was killed in December 2023 during the Gaza War. The next day, his nephew Maor Cohen Eizenkot was also killed during fighting in southern Gaza.
