Upon Israel’s recognition, the people of Somaliland gathered to celebrate and waved Somaliland flags.
Israel officially recognized Somaliland as an independent country on 26 December. Israel has become the first country to do so.
The anger of Muslim countries is increasing after Israel’s decision. 21 countries around the world have issued a joint statement protesting against this decision.
Somaliland is located in the Horn region of Africa. The country declared independence from Somalia in 1991 and has been seeking international recognition since then.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu signed a joint declaration with Somaliland President Abdirahman Mohamed Abdullahi.
The President of Somaliland called it a historic moment and said the decision would promote peace and prosperity in the Middle East and Africa.

Muslim countries expressed protest in five points
Jordan, Egypt, Algeria, Comoros, Djibouti, Gambia, Iran, Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Maldives, Nigeria, Oman, Pakistan, Palestine, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Somalia, Sudan, Turkey, Yemen have protested against Israel.
Along with this, Organization of Islamic Cooperation has also issued a statement and registered its objection. Five points have been mentioned in the statement.
- We reject Israel’s recognition of the Somali Republican region of Somaliland. Such a move will affect the peace and security of the entire world including the Horn of Africa and the Red Sea. Israel has disregarded international law.
- We strongly condemn such belief. This is a serious violation of the principles of international law and the UN Charter. In which it has been stated that it is necessary to protect the sovereignty of the states and their territorial integrity. This is Israel’s expansionist thinking.
- We fully support the sovereignty of the Republic of Somalia. We reject any action that undermines the unity, territorial integrity or sovereignty of Somalia.
- Separate recognition of any part of a country is a serious threat to international peace and security. At the same time, it is a violation of the basic principles of international law and the UN Charter.
- We reject such steps by Israel and any attempt to forcibly expel the Palestinian people from their land.

African Union said- this is an attack on the sovereignty of Somalia
Many international organizations have also strongly opposed Israel’s move. The Arab League, Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC), African Union (AU) and Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) described Israel’s move as an attack on Somalia’s sovereignty and a violation of international law.
African Union Chairman Mahmoud Ali Yusuf said that Somaliland is an integral part of Somalia and such recognition could be dangerous for peace and stability.
Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Geet called it a clear violation of the principle of unity of states, while the GCC called it a dangerous move that would undermine regional stability.
The OIC issued a joint statement with the foreign ministers of several Muslim countries condemning Israel and expressing full support of Somalia’s sovereignty.
Somalia said – Israel should immediately withdraw this recognition
Somalia’s government described Israel’s decision as a deliberate attack on its sovereignty and a threat to regional peace.
Somalia has demanded immediate withdrawal of recognition from Israel. The EU appealed to respect the territorial integrity of Somalia.
On the other hand, this decision was strongly welcomed in Somaliland and people are celebrating by taking to the streets.
US President Donald Trump also commented on this issue. According to the New York Post, on the question of recognizing Somaliland also, Trump said that he is not making any such plan right now. He added, “Does anyone actually know what Somaliland is?”
Somalia considers Somaliland as its part
The main dispute between Somaliland and Somalia is over the independence and secession of Somaliland. Somaliland (North-Western Region) declared itself an independent republic in 1991, but Somalia considers it an integral part and rejects any secession.
