Manoj Bajpayee talked to Dainik Bhaskar about the film ‘Governor: The Silent Savior’ made on the economic crisis of 1991. He said that the film shows the battle of an RBI Governor becoming the hope of the country and getting the country out of crisis. Manoj called it an ‘economic thriller’. He also expressed his views on the global situation, Iran-US tension, problems of the common man, lack of OTT and theatre. Question: What is the film ‘Governor: The Silent Savior’ about? Answer: This is not just a story of an RBI Governor, but a story of great responsibility. The film shows how much pressure there is when every eye is on you during an economic crisis. At such times, family and personal life are left behind. The film shows the same struggle and pressure. Question: The film has difficult topics like economics and RBI. How will the general audience understand this? Answer: There are words like GDP, fiscal deficit and inflation in the film, but they are shown in an easy manner. This is not a classroom film, but an ‘economic thriller’. Here the challenge of getting the country out of the economic crisis in a short time creates excitement. Question: How did you prepare for this character? Answer: I read the script several times and whatever things I did not understand, I understood them from the director and writers. The director used to send study material and videos. The character’s look and manner of speaking were decided. Preparations took about two and a half months. The most difficult thing was to understand the technical terms and convey them to the audience in an easy manner. Question: On one hand, you were doing Ram Gopal Varma’s film, where the atmosphere was completely different, whereas on the set of ‘Governor’, people started seeing you as a very calm and serious person. What was it like in this character? Answer: This character is a man of few words, who is mostly busy in his thoughts. People involved with numbers, mathematics and big responsibilities are often calm and constantly thinking about challenges. The RBI Governor is also always engaged in solving the crisis, hence this is not a serious character but a person who thinks continuously from within. Question: Will humor be seen along with seriousness in the film? Answer: Absolutely. There is family bonding in the film. Madhu is playing the role of my wife. Went crazy after watching his film ‘Roja’. The scenes with them are light and cute. There is humor in some parts of the office as well. Being a thriller, the audience will remain connected to the story. Question: You have also been a student of history. What similarity do you see between the economic crisis of 1991 and today’s situation? Answer: During the Gulf War in 1991, oil prices were rising and India was facing economic crisis. Even today, tensions like US-Iran impact the global economy. Oil becomes expensive, dollar strengthens and pressure on countries like India increases. History does not repeat itself completely, but its glimpse is definitely visible. Question: What can a common man do in such a crisis? Answer: Major economic decisions are the work of experts and governments. The common man can control his expenses. In difficult times, people avoid unnecessary expenditure, buying a house, travelling, and big expenses. People move cautiously because they feel that times ahead may be difficult. Question: Can the common man change the system? Answer: The system remains strong only until the common man asks questions. If problems are not heard then people raise their voice. Many times in history the common man has brought about change. The strength of the people has also come to the fore in times like Emergency and 1991 crisis. Question: Along with the release of the film, other big films are also coming. Should such films get solo releases? Answer: The biggest problem in India is the lack of theatre. If the government and industry build more cinema halls, then all small and big films will get equal opportunity. Every film has the right to reach the audience. Question: Should the monopoly of some big production houses also end? Answer: Yes. It should be decided how many shows a film of which budget should get. Small films should not be harmed by big films taking up more screens. Every film should get equal opportunity to reach the audience. Question: How much benefit has OTT provided to such films? Answer: OTT benefited me a lot and I also got a chance to do good work. But now the platforms have become more commercial and unsafe. Earlier, different types of stories used to get more opportunities, which has now reduced. Question: What will the audience take away from this film? Answer: The biggest message of this film is “stubbornness”, but sensible stubbornness. This character tries to find a way out of every difficulty and does not give up till the end. Question: Do you think there is some similarity between your life and this character? Answer: Yes, there is stubbornness in my life also. Sometimes sensible, sometimes slightly foolish stubbornness. But that same stubbornness has taken me here.
