‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is R Madhavan’s first film as a director.

R Madhavan, who has acted powerfully in many films like ‘3 Idiots’, ‘Dhurandhar’, ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’, ‘Tanu Weds Manu’ and ‘Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein’, is counted among the most talented, simple and versatile actors of Bollywood and South Industry.

Farhan’s character played in R Madhavan’s ‘3 Idiots’ and his dialogue ‘Abba Nahi Manenge’ are still popular in memes made on social media. However, few people know that Farhan’s character was closely related to Madhavan’s real life.

In real life too, he had told his father that he did not know what he wanted to become, but he did not want to become an engineer. This was the reason why the emotions and struggles of Farhan’s character looked so natural on screen.

wanted to join the army

R Madhavan was born on 1 June 1970 in Jamshedpur, Jharkhand (then Bihar) in a Tamil Brahmin family. His father was a management executive in Tata Steel and mother was a manager in Bank of India.

During college, Madhavan appeared for NCC and participated in many events on behalf of India. He also trained with the British Army, Navy and Air Force.

He wanted to join the Indian Army, but by the time he returned after completing his training, he was just 6 months older than the age limit of Short Service Commission (SSC) and due to rules, he could not join the army.

R. Madhavan completed his early education from DBMS English School, Jamshedpur.

Madhavan had told his father- I do not want to do engineering

R Madhavan was very bright in extra-curricular activities, NCC and communication, but was an average student in terms of studies.

Madhavan had told in an interview to Ranveer Allahabadia, ‘I had failed in 8th. Got 39% in Maths. The school did not let me go to the next class.

The actor had told that his parents were very sad about this. Coming from a South Indian family, his parents wanted their son to become an engineer, work in Tata Steel and live a stable life.

He had said, ‘My parents thought that I would not be able to do anything in life. They were afraid that I would not even get married.

Later, when Madhavan did not get admission in engineering college, his father was heartbroken. Madhavan had told that his father had tears in his eyes.

Madhavan had said, ‘Father asked me- What wrong have I done to you? What do you want to do?’ On this he said, he does not know what he wants to do, but he does not want to do engineering.

The love story of R Madhavan and his wife Sarita Birje is no less than a film script. The interesting thing is that the girl whom Madhavan later married was once his student.

When Madhavan was completing his B.Sc graduation in Kolhapur, he started a course in public speaking. His classes were quite famous in Kolhapur in those days. Madhavan and Sarita’s first meeting also took place during these classes.

In ‘The Bombay Journey’, Madhavan had said, ‘She (Sarita) had come to Kolhapur to meet her cousin. His cousin studied in my classes.

After this, Sarita also became a student of R Madhavan and took public speaking classes from him.

After completing the course, Sarita became an air hostess. She considered Madhavan’s classes as the reason behind this. After this he called Madhavan for dinner. After this their love story started and later they both got married.

R Madhavan married Sarita Birje on 7 June 1999. Before marriage, both of them dated each other for about 8 years.

When Mani Ratnam called, I thought my friend was joking.

R Madhavan started his acting career with TV serials. He worked in shows like ‘Banegi Apni Baat’, ‘Ghar Jamai’, ‘Sea Hawks’ and ‘Aahat’.

His big break in films came from director Mani Ratnam’s film ‘Alaipayuthe’. There is also an interesting story related to Mani Ratnam.

Actually, in the 90s, Madhavan was shooting an advertisement with cinematographer Santosh Sivan. During that time, Santosh had shown some of his photographs to Mani Ratnam. After this Mani Ratnam called Madhavan for his film ‘Iruvar’.

When he was told in the call that it was Mani Ratnam, Madhavan thought that his friend was joking, so he disconnected the call.

After this Mani Ratnam called once again. This time he started talking in Tamil. Then he was convinced that it was Mani Ratnam, because his friends could not speak Tamil.

Mani Ratnam spoke to Madhavan, called him for an audition, but rejected him for the film. Saying that his eyes look very young, hence he does not fit in that role. However, they promised that they will definitely work together in future.

Mani Ratnam cast Madhavan in his film ‘Alaipayuthey’. R Madhavan’s career as a lead role started with this film. The film proved to be a blockbuster and he became a star. The Hindi remake of this film was made with the name of ‘Saathiya’.

R Madhavan and Mani Ratnam have worked together in films like ‘Alaipayuthey’ (2000), ‘Kannathil Muthamittal’ (2002) and ‘Aaytha Ezhuthu’ (2004).

Drink alcohol to make the alcohol scene look real.

The film ‘3 Idiots’ is counted among the most famous films of R Madhavan. His role Farhan is very famous even in today’s generation and many memes have been made on it.

To make the alcohol scene of this film look real, all three actors Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi actually drank alcohol.

Madhavan had told in Ranveer Allahabadia’s podcast that this idea was Aamir Khan’s. He believed that it is better to actually drink a little instead of acting drunk, because a real drunk person tries to become normal.

Madhavan had said, ‘Aamir said never act like a drunkard. Try to become normal by drinking alcohol, only then it will seem real.

All three planned to take 3-4 pegs before shooting and then shoot the scene, but suddenly there was a technical problem in the shooting and the shoot got delayed by 2 hours.

Madhavan had laughingly told, ‘We thought that we have to maintain the same amount of alcohol in the body, so we kept drinking, but we did not know that the cold air of Bangalore would increase the effect of alcohol so much.’

He had said, ‘When the shoot started, we felt that we were absolutely normal, but in reality it was taking hours to speak each dialogue.’

Madhavan even got his teeth broken for ‘Rocketry’

‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ was not just R Madhavan’s film, it was his passion. Madhavan had completely transformed himself to play the role of scientist Nambi Narayanan in the film.

Nowadays, most actors in films use prosthetic makeup to change their age, but Madhavan did not choose the easy path.

He had told in the interview given to Lallantop that in the film he had to show the look from 29 years to 80 years and for this he did not use any prosthetic.

Madhavan had said, ‘We did not use any prosthetic. I literally gained weight, lost weight, grew hair.

The most painful change was to his teeth. Madhavan had told that he had even changed the shape of his teeth to look like Nambi Narayanan.

He had said- ‘I got my teeth crooked. It took him one and a half years to recover.

The film ‘Rocketry: The Nambi Effect’ is based on ISRO’s aerospace engineer and scientist S. Nambi was based on the life of Narayanan.

R Madhavan did not come to receive the Padma Shri award. The picture is of his receiving the National Award.

Shahrukh Khan worked for free in ‘Rocketry’

Shahrukh Khan did a cameo in the film ‘Rocketry’ and he did not charge any fee for it. Madhavan had told that at that time he was working with Shahrukh in the film ‘Zero’. Meanwhile, on Shahrukh’s birthday, he narrated the story of ‘Rocketry’.

In an interview given to Lallantop, Madhavan had said, ‘Shahrukh told me – Maddy, I want to be a part of your film.’

Madhavan first thought that Shahrukh was joking. He hugged him and ended the conversation by thanking him. But Shahrukh was serious.

Madhavan had told, ‘He said- No friend, I am serious. Make me do anything, make me stand in the background, but I want to be a part of your film.

After a few days, Madhavan’s wife Sarita interrupted him saying that Shahrukh had spoken so lovingly, he should at least message her. After this Madhavan messaged Shahrukh’s manager.

The actor had said, ‘Immediately the reply came – Shahrukh is asking, when are the dates to be given?’ Even then Madhavan could not believe it. He thought that maybe he would have been asked only to keep his heart, but Shahrukh took out full time and shot.

Madhavan had told, ‘Shahrukh had come with his entire team. He even hired a separate writer to understand the dialogue. He didn’t take a single penny from me.

In the film ‘Rocketry’, Shahrukh Khan was seen in the role of a show host, who interviews Nambi Narayanan (R Madhavan).

Madhavan had shifted to Dubai for his son’s career.

R Madhavan’s son Vedant Madhavan has chosen swimming as his career. Representing India at the national level, he won 5 gold and 2 silver medals. Madhavan decided to shift to Dubai for the sake of his son Vedant’s career.

Actually, Vedant was taking professional swimming training. Then Covid arrived and swimming pools in India were closed.

In a conversation with Rannvijay Singh, Madhavan had said, ‘I had read long ago that the age of 9 to 15 years is the growth spurt period of children. That’s when they need exercise and physical training the most.

He had said, ‘Unfortunately or fortunately, Vedanta’s growth spurt came during Covid. All the pools in India were closed, so we were very worried.

Madhavan had told that one day his wife Sarita decided that she could not wait any longer.

He had said, ‘My wife said- enough is enough. Pools are open in Dubai. She went to Dubai alone with Vedant in August 2020.

Madhavan had told that after some time he also went to Dubai and settled with his family. There Vedanta trained intensely and during that time he started winning medals for India.

R Madhavan had rejected Pan Masala advertisement

Today, while many big stars are seen endorsing Pan Masala and Gutkha brands, Madhavan rejected the offer worth crores of rupees only because he did not want to give the wrong message to his audience.

Actually, a big pan masala company was looking for a new face for its brand. The company wanted Madhavan to promote it. For this he was offered a huge amount, but Madhavan flatly refused.

According to an India Today report, Madhavan believed that being a public figure, his responsibility was not just to earn money but also to understand the impact it had on people.
