Demolition of parts of the East Wing of the White House, the official residence of US President Donald Trump, has started. On Monday, crews broke an entryway and several windows in the east wing.
Now a new ballroom will be built here. Trump has said that this part is being completely modernized. This ballroom can seat 999 people.
In July its capacity was said to be 650 people. The ballroom will be ready by January 2029, before Trump’s term ends.
The White House has started this construction work, but it has not yet received approval from the National Capital Planning Commission (NCPC). This commission approves the construction and major renovation of government buildings in the Washington area.
Many parts of the East Wing of the White House were demolished with the help of bulldozers on Monday.
First Lady’s office is in the East Wing
The East Wing houses several offices, including the First Lady’s office. It was built in 1902. In July, White House Press Secretary Carolyn Leavitt said that offices would be temporarily relocated during construction and the East Wing would be renovated.
Trump says the new 90,000-square-foot ballroom is being built because the East Room, which is the largest room in the White House, is too small to hold 200 people.
Trump announced this by posting on social media that the ground has been prepared for the ballroom. He said,
For 150 years, every President has dreamed of building a ballroom in the White House, so that there would be space for big parties and state visits.
Government money will not be used for the ballroom
Government money is not being used to build the ballroom. Trump has said that it will not cost American taxpayers to build it. It will be funded by private donations.
Trump also said that Carrier Global Corp. has offered to donate the air conditioning system for the ballroom. Preparations for the construction work started last month.
