For the first time, the American passport has been out of the top 10 list of the most powerful passports in the world.
According to the Henley Passport Index 2025, this has happened for the first time in 20 years. Now the US passport is at number 12, which is equal to Malaysia. With this passport one can visit 180 out of 227 countries without visa.
On the other hand, the Singapore passport is the most powerful, granting visa-free entry to 193 countries. It is followed by South Korea (190) and Japan (189).
According to the index, Indian passport is ranked 77th. India’s ranking has improved by 8 places. An Indian passport provides visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 59 countries.
Why did the American passport become weak?
Many countries tightened visa rules for Americans. Brazil ended visa-free entry in April. China did not include America in its visa-free program. New regulations in Papua New Guinea, Myanmar, Somalia and Vietnam have also affected the strength of the US passport.
Christian Kellin, Chairman of Henley & Partners, said – The lack of strength of the American passport is not just a matter of ranking. This shows that the game of power in the world is changing. The countries which adopt openness are moving forward, and those which stick to old thinking are lagging behind.
An expert named Anne Pforzheimer said that America’s strict policy thinking is visible in the reduction in the strength of their passports.
Improvement in ranking due to India’s growing strength
The impact of India’s growing power at the global level is also visible on its passport ranking. Apart from this, use of digital technology and new agreements have also played a special role.
Reason for improvement in Indian passport…
- Agreement: India entered into visa-free or VOA agreements with countries such as the Philippines and Sri Lanka.
- Strong Diplomacy: Due to India’s growing economy and relations, countries like Malaysia, Thailand eased visa rules.
- Digital Feature: E-Visa and VOA got a boost, which counts in the index.
- Tourism and Trade: Seeing more tourists and business from India, countries gave relaxation.
Britain’s passport also weakened
The British passport also slipped down from 6th to 8th position. In 2015 it was at number one. At the same time, China’s passport was at 94th place in 2015, which has now reached 64th place. It has got visa free entry in 37 new countries.
China allows 76 countries to visit it without visa, which is 30 more than America. China has signed visa-free agreements with Russia, Gulf countries, South America and many countries in Europe.
