In the heart of Chennaia politically significant constituency is shaping up to be a testing ground for a new generation of leaders, with Egmore (Reserved) witnessing an unusually tight four-way contest in the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly polls. What makes the 2026 elections particularly striking is that all major parties have chosen fresh faces, signalling a deliberate shift towards younger leadership.
The Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) has fielded Tamilan Prasanna, a lawyer known for his sharp articulation and regular appearances in televised debates. The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) has nominated Abishek Rengasamy, a law graduate and entrepreneur with nearly two decades of association with the party. Actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has put forward Raj Mohan, while the Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK) has fielded Saranya, an IT professional.
Despite their differing political affiliations, all four candidates share a common profile; they are young, first-time Assembly contenders, each representing a generational pivot within their respective parties, reported NDTV.
Expressing confidence in retaining the seat, Prasanna said Egmore has historically backed his party and that this trend will continue. “We are very confident that Egmore will continue to be DMK’s fort,” he told NDTV, adding that the party’s ideology and youth support remain strong. He also spoke of his plans to develop the constituency under the leadership of Chief Minister MK Stalin.
Rengasamy, meanwhile, pushed back against the notion of Chennai being a DMK stronghold, calling it a “narrative”, reported NDTV. Positioning himself as the youngest AIADMK candidate, he highlighted infrastructure gaps, recurring flooding and the prevalence of drugs as key issues, promising focused intervention if elected.
Raj Mohan, who first gained recognition through his YouTube channel Tamil Vanakkam and now anchors party events, leaned heavily on the popularity of his party leader. According to NDTV, he said that Vijay enjoys widespread appeal across Chennai households and claimed that rival parties have fielded young candidates in response to TVK’s growing youth base. He also flagged basic civic issues such as poor roads and inadequate sanitation facilities.
Saranya, the NTK candidate, has reportedly centred her campaign on local familiarity and lived experience. Born and raised in Egmore, she said that she understands the constituency’s problems better than her rivals. She pointed to poor sanitation and monsoon flooding as persistent concerns and promised grassroots-level development.
Egmore, a reserved constituency, has long been considered a DMK bastion. However, the party’s decision to deny a ticket to sitting MLA Paranthaman and introduce a new face indicates an attempt to refresh its appeal amid evolving political dynamics.
Situated in central Chennai, Egmore encompasses prominent landmarks such as the Chennai Egmore railway station, the Connemara Public Library and the Government Museum. Yet, despite its prime location, residents continue to grapple with chronic civic issues; from waterlogging during monsoons and traffic congestion to encroachments by street vendors, particularly in Purasawalkam. Housing concerns in areas like KP Park and delays in securing land ownership documents remain unresolved.
Reflecting public sentiment, a long-time resident told NDTV that repeated promises have failed to translate into action. The resident said that during heavy rains, homes are routinely flooded, adding that people now expect tangible development rather than assurances.
As the contest intensifies, the DMK is banking on its legacy to retain control, while the AIADMK is attempting to tap into anti-incumbency. Meanwhile, the TVK and NTK are targeting younger voters, hoping to disrupt the traditional political order in one of Chennai’s most closely watched constituencies.
