The mega auction of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) is scheduled to begin at 3.30 pm today. 5 teams retained 17 players, so 73 players will be sold in the auction. Teams have Rs 41.10 crore to buy them. However, 277 players will enter the auction, which means around 200 players will remain unsold.
Why mega auction? A mega auction takes place every 3 years in the WPL, in which franchises have the opportunity to rebuild their teams. The last mega auction took place in 2022. This was followed by mini auctions in 2023 and 2024. Many players can be retained in the mini auction, whereas only a maximum of 5 players can be retained in the mega auction.

1. Auction will be held in New Delhi
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) organizes the country’s two franchise leagues, the Indian Premier League (IPL) and the Women’s Premier League (WPL). BCCI will also conduct WPL mega auction on 27th November. The auction is to start at 3.30 pm at the Aerocity Hotel in New Delhi.
2. Bidding will be held on 277 players
BCCI has shortlisted 277 players for the auction. These include 194 players from India and 66 from abroad. Of which there are 159 uncapped players, who did not make their international debut. However, out of 277, only a maximum of 73 players can be sold. Because only this number of places are vacant in 5 teams. These may include 50 Indian and 23 foreign players.
3. UP’s purse is the biggest
Mumbai Indians (MI), Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Delhi Capitals (DC), UP Warriors (UPW) and Gujarat Giants (GG) are the 5 teams. All the teams had a purse of Rs 15 crore, but after retention, different amounts were left in the purse of each team. UP has the highest purse of Rs 14.50 crore. Gujarat has Rs 9 crore. Whereas the purse of MI, DC, and RCB is less than Rs 6.50 crore.
4. Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur retained
5 teams retained 17 players, including 7 foreigners and 3 uncapped. India’s winners were Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Richa Ghosh, Jemimah Rodriguez, Shefali Verma, Amanjot Kaur and Shreyanka Patil. Apart from Shreyanka, the remaining 6 players were also part of the team that won the ODI World Cup.
5. UP retained only one player
Yes, before the mega auction, teams could retain a maximum of 5 players only. 2 teams made full use of it. The remaining 3 teams kept less than 5 players. Therefore, he will also have a Right to Match (RTM) card in the auction. RCB has 1, Gujarat has 3 and UP has 4 RTM cards. RTM cards can be used by teams in the auction. Teams can re-participate released players in the auction.
Let us understand this with an example. UP Warriors released Australia’s Alyssa Healy. If DC bought him in the auction for Rs 2 crore. Then UPW can use its RTM card to include Healy in its team. However, if DC increases Healy’s price to Rs 4 crore then UPW will have to include Healy in the squad at the new price. If UPW refuses to pay the new price, Healy will become part of DC at the new price.
6. Highest number of vacant seats in Gujarat-UP
MI and DC retained 5 players each. RCB kept 4 players and Gujarat kept 2 players. Whereas UP retained only 1 uncapped player. A team can have 15 to 18 players, out of which a maximum of 6 can be foreigners. Accordingly, there is vacancy for 73 players in the teams.
7. Auction will start from marquee set
Players have been divided into different sets in the auction. First comes the marquee set. In which there are 8 players, who are in highest demand. Then comes the number of international batsmen, all-rounders, wicketkeepers, pacers and spinners. After international comes the number of uncapped players.
8. Highest base price of ₹50 lakh
The marquee set includes New Zealand’s Sophie Devine, Amelia Kerr, England’s Sophie Eccleston, Australia’s Alyssa Healy, Meg Lanning, South Africa’s Laura Wolvaardt, India’s Deepti Sharma and Renuka Singh.
The base price of 6 players in the marquee set is Rs 50 lakh. Renuka’s salary is Rs 40 lakh and Volwart’s salary is Rs 30 lakh. The base price of a total of 19 players was kept at Rs 50 lakh. The price of 11 players is Rs 40 lakh and that of 88 players is Rs 30 lakh. The base price of the remaining players is Rs 10 and 20 lakh.
9. Eyes on Deepti, Healy, Lanning
India’s World Cup winning players Deepti Sharma, Renuka Singh, Kranti Gaur and Shri Charani can be sold at expensive prices. Among foreigners, Alyssa Healy, Sophie Eccleston, Amelia Kerr, Meg Lanning, Phoebe Litchfield and Grace Harris can also become millionaires.
