Dipu Chandra Das, a 25-year-old Hindu youth, was lynched to death and his body was set on fire over alleged blasphemy in Bangladesh. His brutal killing sparked major outrage and flagged the poor condition of minorities in the country. Dipu Das’ brother, Apu Das, spoke exclusively to CNN News18 and expressed that his family is scared and no longer wants to live in Bangladesh.
Apu also added that his family would like to go back to India if proper help is provided.
He said, “He (Dipu) is left behind by a small child. If we had the facility, we would love to leave Bangladesh now, and if we get help, we would like to go back to India.”
Apu also told CNN News18 that his brother kept saying that he insulted no one.
Dipu was a factory worker in Mymensingh city. He was first beaten up by a mob outside the factory over blasphemy allegations and then hanged from a tree.
Das was killed on Thursday night amid violence that began after the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi. As per the police, the mob dumped the Hindu youth’s body on the side of the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway and set it on fire, bringing traffic on both sides of the road to a standstill.
Minority Groups Protest In Bangladesh
Minority groups in Bangladesh on Monday held a protest in the national capital over the interim government’s failure to prevent the persecution of minorities, as authorities announced the arrest of 21 suspects linked to the lynching of a Hindu man, attacks on media offices, and violent demonstrations near an Indian diplomatic mission.
Leaders of Hindu and other minority organisations on Monday formed a human chain in Dhaka against the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, saying the interim government has failed to stop violence, killings, and persecution of minority communities.
Das, a garment factory worker in central Mymensingh city, was dragged out of the factory by a mob and lynched to death on Thursday. His body was then set on fire.
His killing sparked widespread protests by factory workers, students, and rights groups while India expressed concerns as well.
“He (Muhammad Yunus) claims he will build a humane Bangladesh, but in reality, he is an inhumane chief adviser,” Joint Coordinator of the Minority Unity Front, Manindra Kumar Nath, told the protesters in front of Jatiya Press Club.
