Recently, Canada eliminated the popular Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa programme, which allowed foreign students to obtain study permits more quickly in Canada. The move has left several Indian students disappointed. “It’s not right to stop visas midway. There are so many opportunities and dream jobs we will miss out on,” one student told ANI.
“I was trying to go to Canada but the situation is that Canada has stopped the visa. That was not right because many Indian population want to go abroad for studies and the politics that is being used in this is also wrong.” the student from Chandigarh told the news agency adding that politics should not disrupt students’ education dreams.
Visa counselor Rahul Arora said that it is an adverse decision for both countries. It can negatively impact “children’s ambitions and dreams of going forward and studying, the dreams that they have been trying for years, will be hit by that. And I think that this is an adverse decision for both the countries,” he told the news agency.
The Student Direct Stream (SDS) was launched in 2018 to provide faster visa processing for eligible post-secondary students from across 14 countries including India, Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Senegal, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and Vietnam.
The Canadian government has also removed the Nigeria Student Express (NSE). Eligible students have now been invited to apply through the regular study permit stream, which accepts Guaranteed Investment Certificates as proof of financial support.
“This change will not adversely affect eligibility for those who wish to apply for a study permit from a country where the SDS or NSE initiatives have been offered. All students, regardless of whether they were eligible for the SDS or NSE, are required to meet Canada’s study permit application requirements,” the Canadian government had said.
