Lionel Messi-led Argentina’s men’s football team’s scheduled visit to Kerala next month for an international friendly match against Australia in Kochi is off. According to a report in Spanish media outlet La Nacion, in which they quoted an official with the Argentine Football Association (AFA), the three-time FIFA World Cup winners will not travel to Kerala because the Indian state failed to meet the requirements to stage the match.
“We did everything possible to make it happen in November; a delegation even travelled to India to see the field, the hotel… but ultimately, India couldn’t meet the requirements,” an AFA official was quoted as saying by La Nacion.
The official also added that the deal with Kerala fell through because “there were repeated breaches”.
“Unfortunately, there were repeated breaches by India, and what we’re going to do is reorganise the contract to find a new date,” he added.
Popular Argentine journalist Gastón Edul, in an X post on October 15, 2025, also claimed that there are serious doubts about Argentina’s fixture in India going ahead as planned.
According to him, Argentina’s match in India fell through, but the one against Angola is confirmed.
“Argentina’s next matches are in November, between the 10th and the 19th. The match in India fell through. The one against Angola is confirmed. López and Aníbal Moreno played and linked up well. The next tour will not include some of the regulars, and Scaloni will continue experimenting,” the translation of Gastón Edul’s post “Argentina’s next matches are in November. Between the 10th and 19th. The match in India fell. The Angola match is confirmed. López and Aníbal Moreno played and got along well. The next tour will not have some references and Scaloni will continue testing,” read.

The development of Messi not coming to India came on the sidelines of Cristiano Ronaldo’s decision to skip Al Nassr’s AFC Champions League 2 match against FC Goa on Wednesday (October 22). Ronaldo, who plays for Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League, chose not to come to India for his team’s scheduled match against the Indian Super League (ISL) side.
