Kolkata RG Kar Rape-Murder Case: Months after the horrific rape and murder of a woman trainee doctor inside the premises of state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, a local court in Kolkata convicted main accused Sanjay Roy in the case, on Saturday.
Roy, 33, will be sentenced on Monday, providing justice to the victim of the brutal incident that had shaken the entire nation last year. The 31-year-old trainee doctor was found dead on August 9, sparking a massive probe and protests that brought West Bengal to a standstill. The barbaric incident happened while she was on duty on August 8 night.

Sanjoy Roy is the main accused in the rape-murder case. He was arrested on August 10, a day after the matter came to light. Earlier, he has also worked as a civic volunteer with the Kolkata Police’s Disaster Management Group since 2019, as per a report in NDTV. Civic volunteers are hired on a contractual basis to assist the police with various tasks, such as traffic management and disaster response. These volunteers also receive a monthly salary. However, they do not enjoy the same benefits as regular police personnel.
According to sources, the 33-year-old would often masquerade as an officer, donning a Kolkata Police T-shirt, using his links to stay in barracks. Roy was allegedly involved in a racket within the hospital. He was accused of taking bribes and extorting money from patients’ relatives by promising to secure them a bed. The 33-year-old is said to have a history of violence against women as multiple reports suggest.
Roy was later transferred to the Police Welfare Cell and assigned to the police outpost at the hospital, granting him access to all departments within the facility.
Soon after the incident created an uproar, his neighbours also come forward and revealed disturbing details about his personal life. They alleged he had married multiple times, with three of his wives parting ways with him due to his abusive nature.
How Investigators Linked Roy to the Crime:
The CCTV footage accessed by investigators showed Roy entering the emergency building of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital at 4am on the day of the incident. It was noted that he was wearing a Bluetooth device around his neck at that time. However, 40 minutes later, when he came out of the building, the earphone was missing which was later recovered near the victim’s body. The device was was paired with Roy’s cellphone, which put him under police investigators’ scanner.
