Former England footballer Wayne Rooney has said that Michael Carrick should be appointed as Manchester United’s full-time manager, after the latter led the team to a 3-1 win against Aston Villa on Sunday, March 15, at Old Trafford.
Carrick’s team boosted their push for next season’s UEFA Champions League qualification with second-half goals from Casemiro, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko.
United are in third place in the Premier League, three points ahead of Villa as they chase a top-four finish.
“I know him very well. I know his character, his personality. It needed a calm head, but someone who knows the place and the players needed some love and he has given them that,” Rooney said while speaking to the BBC.
“We have seen the players play with more quality, more together as a team and they look like a very strong team. For me, why would you change?” Rooney added.
A seventh victory in nine matches under Carrick lifted Manchester United six points above sixth-placed Chelsea FC, putting them in contention for a Champions League spot.
Carrick would love to take the job on after a glittering playing career at United.
His only previous managerial stint ended in disappointment at second-tier Middlesbrough FC, but Carrick has provided a stabilising presence at Manchester United after Ruben Amorim’s turbulent tenure.
Manchester United co-owner Jim Ratcliffe lauded Carrick’s work as ‘excellent’ this week but didn’t confirm whether he would stay in charge beyond the current season.
When asked about speculation over his future, Carrick said, “There is not that much noise, is there? I don’t mean Wayne, just in general. It is only noise if you listen to it.”
“It does not affect me one bit, to be honest. I am in this position at the moment, doing the best I can, loving it obviously and we keep pushing for more,” Carrick added.
