Ajit Pawar died in an accident on 28 January 2026 near Baramati Airport in Pune district of Maharashtra.

Aviation regulator DGCA on Friday issued new guidelines for aircraft operators carrying VVIPs traveling including Chief Ministers, Union Ministers and Governors.

These guidelines will be applicable to non-scheduled aircraft and helicopter operators who carry VVIPs. These rules come after the deadly plane crash in January, which killed Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar and four other people. The accident took place on 28 January 2026 near Baramati Airport located in Pune district of Maharashtra.

DGCA said that analysis of past incidents and incidents has revealed that there have been several violations of rules and regulations during operations at airstrips/temporary helipads and in VVIP flights during election time, thereby jeopardizing security.

According to DGCA, it is extremely important for all concerned to take necessary steps to ensure the highest level of safety in such flights.

Asked to strictly follow SOP in the guidelines

  • All operators must strictly follow DGCA rules and SOP (Standard Operating Procedure).
  • Any kind of negligence or rule violation will not be tolerated.
  • It will be mandatory to get correct weather information before flying.
  • Instructions have been given to avoid flying in bad weather.

Inspection of helipad and airstrip necessary

  • Before using temporary helipads or small airstrips, their thorough investigation will be necessary.
  • Safe environment has to be ensured for landing/takeoff.

Pilot’s responsibility increased

The pilot is given the authority and responsibility to take the final decision. Instructions not to fly under any pressure. Special precautions have been asked to be taken during frequent flights during the election period.

Emphasis on reducing fatigue and risk. Better coordination is required between Air Traffic Control (ATC), security agencies and operators. Proper monitoring of every flight will be ensured.
