Success Story: Ishwari Kamalesh Pande, a 17-year-old swimmer from Nagpur, Maharashtrahas scripted history by becoming the first visually impaired swimmer to cross the Palk Strait.
Born with visual impairment, her journey from learning to swim as a child to completing a demanding open-water challenge stands as a remarkable example of determination and resilience.
Early Start And Strong Family Support
Ishwari is the daughter of Kamalesh Vittal Rao Pande and Aruna Kamalesh Pande, who introduced her to swimming at the age of 10. Initially, the aim was to help her learn a life skill, but her growing interest and natural ability soon became evident.
Recognising her potential, her parents, along with her coaches, encouraged her to participate in competitive swimming events.
Over the years, she competed in several national-level tournaments for visually impaired swimmers, consistently winning medals and gaining recognition.
Challenging Swim Across The Palk Strait
In her latest achievement, Ishwari undertook the ambitious challenge of swimming approximately 25 kilometres from Talaimannar in Sri Lanka to Dhanushkodi in India. She began her swim at around 4 am, facing harsh weather conditions, including strong winds and heavy rain.
Despite the difficult start, she maintained her pace and focus throughout the journey. After nearly 11 hours and 15 minutes in the water, she successfully reached the Indian shore at Dhanushkodi in the afternoon, marking a historic milestone.
Battling Harsh Weather Conditions
According to swimming analyst M Vijayakumar, the initial phase of the swim was particularly challenging due to adverse weather. However, as the journey progressed, favourable winds eventually aided her movement, helping her reach the shore more efficiently.
While several swimmers have completed this route in the past, Ishwari’s accomplishment is unique, as she is the first visually impaired swimmer to successfully complete the crossing.
Recognition And Records
Her achievement has been officially recognised by the Theni Open Water Swimming Academy and the IEA Book of World Records, both of which honoured her with medals and certificates.
The milestone has drawn widespread appreciation from the sporting community and beyond.
Rigorous Training And Coaching Support
Ishwari has been training under coach Sanjay Purushothaman Padve since she was 10 years old. Given her visual impairment, her training involved specialised techniques. Her coach focused on teaching her movements through physical guidance, holding her hands and feet to help her understand each stroke and motion.
Her ability to quickly grasp these techniques made training more effective, allowing her to steadily improve her performance over the years.
Years Of Competitive Success
For the past seven years, Ishwari has actively participated in numerous competitions for visually impaired swimmers, securing multiple victories and building an impressive record.
