Vaibhav Sooryavanshi will make people forget Abhishek: Ex-Pak cricketer’s bizarre claim

Former Pakistan pacer Tanveer Ahmed has stirred debate with a bold claim about rising star Vaibhav Suryavanshi, suggesting the teenager’s talent could overshadow established names like Abhishek Sharma.

Speaking about the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Tanveer said that once Suryavanshi breaks into the Indian team, his aggressive and fearless approach could make him the centre of attention, even when batting alongside top players.

“When Suryavanshi plays for India, people will forget Abhishek Sharma. And when both are batting together, Abhishek won’t come even close to Suryavanshi,” Tanveer remarked as quoted by Hindustan Times.

He went a step further, adding that fans would be so captivated by Suryavanshi that “people won’t even notice Abhishek.”

However, the former pacer later softened his stance, acknowledging the uncertainty that comes with projecting long-term success. “Over a period of 10 years or so, I can’t say if Suryavanshi will be as devastating. I am talking about right now,” he clarified.

Suryavanshi, who represents Rajasthan Royals, has been one of the breakout stars of the season. At just 15, the opener has taken the tournament by storm and currently leads the Orange Cap race with 200 runs from just four innings. His fearless stroke play has caught the attention of fans and experts alike, with his standout knock being a blistering 78 off 26 balls against Royal Challengers Bengaluru. What has made his rise even more remarkable is his ability to take on elite bowlers, including Jasprit Bumrah and Josh Hazlewood, with confidence well beyond his years.

In contrast, Abhishek Sharma continues to hold his ground as one of India’s most reliable T20 batters. The Sunrisers Hyderabad opener endured a mixed run during the T20 World Cup but still delivered crucial contributions, including fifties against Zimbabwe and New Zealand. Entering IPL 2026 with high expectations, he recently found form with a fluent 74 against Punjab Kings on April 11, taking his tally to 182 runs in the season so far.

While Tanveer’s comments have generated significant buzz, comparisons of this nature may be premature. Abhishek remains the top-ranked T20I batter in the ICC rankings and has consistently delivered at the highest level. Suryavanshi’s rise, meanwhile, signals the arrival of a rare talent, but whether he can sustain this level over time remains to be seen.
