With summer break in full swing, Second Lady Usha Vance is encouraging children to make the most of their free time by diving into books. She’s calling on young readers to turn the season into an adventure filled with imagination, learning, and discovery.
On June 1, she started the 2025 Summer Reading Challenge—a program for kids from kindergarten to Class 8. They need to read 12 books of their choice during the summer. Kids who join can win small prizes, get special certificates, and might even get a chance to visit Washington, D.C.

How To Join The Challenge
Kids need to finish the challenge by September 5, 2025. After reading all 12 books, participants have to share something about their favourite book or character through a short write-up or a drawing, and submit it along with a signed form to complete the challenge.
Why This Challenge Is Extra Special
Every child who completes the challenge will get a special certificate and a fun prize. Plus, if they send in their completed forms on time, they can enter into a national lucky draw to win a trip to Washington, D.C., with a parent or guardian by their side.
The Inspiration Behind the Challenge
In a recent interview with Fox and Friends, Second Lady Usha Vance spoke about what inspired the reading challenge. She expressed concern over the drop in reading scores across the country and the common issue of “summer learning loss,” where kids forget what they’ve learned during the school break. She hoped that the initiative could spark a lifelong love of reading, especially in children who may need extra support during the summer.
Here’s How Students Can Take Part
The challenge is open to all US students from kindergarten through 8th grade. Here’s how to join in:
Step 1: Pick 12 books that interest you—any type, any author.
Step 2: Write down each book in your Reading Log, including the title, author, and when you started and finished.
Step 3: After reading all 12, share your thoughts by writing a short note or drawing a picture of your favourite book or character.
Step 4: Have a parent or guardian sign the form and email everything by September 5, 2025.
Participation is completely optional, but the benefits are immense—improved reading skills, fun discoveries, and a great goal to reach over the summer.
