US Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle has resigned from her post. She decided to resign after taking responsibility for the deadly attack on Trump. She was constantly being pressured by the Republican Party. Trump’s supporters were demanding her resignation.
On the resignation of the Secret Service chief, Republican House Speaker Mike Johnson said in a press conference on Tuesday, “I’m glad she did the right thing.” He said, “She left it too late. She should have done this at least a week ago. I’m glad to see that she has heeded the appeals of both Republicans and Democrats.”
He added, “We must rebuild the trust and confidence of the American people in the Secret Service. As an agency, it has an incredibly important responsibility in protecting presidents, former presidents, and other officials of the executive branch.”

Former President Donald Trump was holding a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13, when an attacker fired bullets at him with an advanced rifle. Trump narrowly escaped in this attack and a bullet passed through the upper part of his ear. A man who was protecting his family in this rally was shot and died. After this attack on Trump, the US Secret Service came under fire.
Republican-Democrat leaders had asked for resignation
The Secret Service faced intense scrutiny and opposition from both Republicans and Democrats for its security failures during the incident. Secret Service chief Cheatle appeared before the House Oversight Committee, where she refused to answer questions from frustrated lawmakers about the security plan and law enforcement response. Several lawmakers called for her resignation.

Cheatle, who has led the agency since 2022, told lawmakers that she took responsibility for the shooting. She acknowledged that it was the Secret Service’s biggest failure since the deadly attack on then-President Ronald Reagan in 1981.
The Secret Service is facing investigations by several congressional committees and the US Department of Homeland Security, its parent organization, over its performance. President Joe Biden, who has withdrawn his candidacy in the presidential election, has also called for an independent review into the matter.
