Monsoon is active in the whole country. The maximum impact is being seen in the western states of the country, Maharashtra, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa. The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for rain in these states on July 14. At the same time, a yellow alert has been issued in Madhya Pradesh, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, Odisha and Chhattisgarh. While there may be heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Arunachal and Jharkhand.

At least 43 people were killed by lightning in Uttar Pradesh on Thursday. 21 people were also killed in Bihar on Saturday. Most of them were planting paddy in the fields, grazing cattle or taking shelter under trees to avoid rain.

On the other hand, seven more people have died due to floods in Assam. With this, the death toll due to rain, landslides and lightning in the state has reached 107. More than 8.4 lakh people in 20 districts of the state are affected by floods.

At the same time, a different scene was seen in Ambachandan village of Mhow district of Madhya Pradesh. Here, the funeral procession of a living person was carried out to please Lord Indra for rain.

The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for Raigad, coastal areas of Ratnagiri, Kolhapur, Satara of Western Maharashtra. Heavy rain has been warned on Sunday, July 14. Uttar Pradesh is among the states with the highest number of deaths due to lightning in the country. So far in July, 84 people have died due to lightning. Therefore, now a system based on Time of Arrival technology will be installed here.

According to the State Disaster Management Authority, the IMD currently relies on radar-based systems and satellite data to warn about the possibility of lightning in an area, but this is not considered a real-time alert. The ToA system can detect the possibility of lightning 30 minutes in advance and warn.

The total cost of this system is Rs 300 crore. In the first phase, Lightning Alert Management System will be implemented in 37 districts. In the second phase, it will be installed in 20 districts and in the third phase, it will be installed in 18 districts.

Heavy rain alert in 8 states including MP, UP
There is an alert of heavy rain in Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh today. There is an alert of storm and lightning in Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha (Maharashtra), Chhattisgarh.

The Meteorological Department has issued rain alert at a total of 21 places including Konkan, Goa, Madhya Maharashtra, Karnataka, Gujarat, Telangana, Assam, Meghalaya, West Bengal, Sikkim, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, Madhya Pradesh, East-West Uttar Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Punjab, Haryana, Jammu, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Andaman-Nicobar.

  • Heavy rainfall is likely over Konkan, Goa, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, ghat areas of Maharashtra, Nagaland and Gujarat from July 14 to 17.
  • There may be heavy rains in Assam, Meghalaya, Odisha, Bihar, West Bengal, Arunachal and Jharkhand.
