A man in Uttar Pradesh chopped his girlfriend into pieces, stored her mutilated body in a metal box, lived with the remains for days, and burnt the body parts one by one to erase evidence in a brutal crime that has shaken the state.
The horrific murder came to light in Jhansi late on Saturday night when a blue tin box, leaking foul-smelling liquid, was found outside a house in the city’s Futa Chaupra locality. When police broke open the box, they discovered partially burnt human body parts, bones, ash and charcoal, exposing a chilling crime allegedly committed by a 64-year-old retired railway employee against his live-in partner, 32-year-old Preeti.
According to police, the accused has been identified as Ram Singh Parihar alias Brijbhan, a resident of Nandanpura in Jhansi. He was arrested late Saturday after remaining on the run for several hours. Preeti, the victim, had been living with him in a rented house in Brahm Nagar area under the Sipri Bazaar police station limits.
Investigators say Ram Singh had two wives and was living with Preeti as his third partner without marriage. Their relationship began nearly a decade ago when Ram Singh was posted on duty at the bungalow of a senior railway officer. Preeti, who worked as a domestic help in a nearby house, came in contact with him during that period.
Preeti was married earlier and had three children, but she left her husband and children to live with Ram Singh. Over time, police say, financial disputes began to surface.
“Initially, the accused fulfilled her demands, but as they increased, he began to feel pressured and frustrated. This appears to have led to the planning of the murder,” a senior police officer said.
Planning, Plotting and the Murder
Police revealed that about 20 days ago, Ram Singh rented a house on a hill in Brahm Nagar, owned by one of his relatives. Around seven days before the crime was detected, he took Preeti to the rented house and allegedly murdered her there.
What followed was a chilling attempt to erase all traces of the crime.
After killing Preeti, Ram Singh allegedly chopped her body into several pieces, wrapped them in tarpaulin, and kept them hidden inside the house. Instead of disposing of the body immediately, he adopted a methodical and gruesome plan.
“For nearly a week, he burnt one body part each day, believing that slow disposal would prevent suspicion and keep the smell confined to the house,” an investigating officer said.
When most of the body parts were burnt, Ram Singh bought a large iron box, placed the partially burnt remains, bones, ash and charcoal inside it, and planned to dump it elsewhere.
Suspicion leads to exposure
On Saturday night, Ram Singh hired a loader auto for Rs 400 to transport the box. According to the loader driver, Jay Singh Pal, Ram Singh claimed it contained household goods.
“I asked him what was inside because it was very heavy. He said it was household items. I refused initially, but he insisted,” the driver told police.
Ram Singh did not travel in the vehicle himself. Instead, his son Nitin and a few others accompanied the loader, while Ram Singh said he would follow on another vehicle.
The box was taken to the house of Ram Singh’s second wife, Geeta Raikwar, located in the Futa Chaupra locality. When Ram Singh failed to arrive, people noticed a strong stench and liquid leaking from the box, raising suspicion.
At around 2am, police were alerted. When officers broke open the locked box, they were confronted with the gruesome contents. “The scene was horrifying. There were half-burnt body parts, bones and ash inside the box,” a police officer present at the spot said.
Accused Arrested, Family Questioned
After the discovery, police detained Ram Singh’s second wife, his sons, and others for questioning. Ram Singh fled but was later arrested following a search operation.
Confirming the arrest, SP City Preeti Singh said, “Main accused Ram Singh Parihar has been taken into custody and is being interrogated. The deceased woman was living with him as his third partner. They were in a relationship for nearly 10 years.”
Police said Ram Singh had retired from the Railways and was known locally for his questionable conduct. Neighbours alleged he frequently targeted women and had a history of illicit relationships.
Jhansi In Shock
The brutality of the murder and the cold-blooded manner in which the accused allegedly lived with the remains for days has sent shockwaves across Jhansi.
“This is not just a case of murder, but of extreme cruelty and moral depravity,” a senior police official said, adding that forensic teams are collecting evidence from the rented house where the crime took place.
Police are now working to reconstruct the sequence of events, while Preeti’s family has been informed.
