The district hospital’s civil surgeon told Local18 that once the state government budget arrives, the salaries for the sweepers will be released

Sweepers at the district hospital in Madhya Pradesh’s Burhanpur have not received their salaries for the last two months, forcing all 60 of them to celebrate a bleak Diwali this year.
These sweepers shoulder the responsibility of cleaning the hospital daily, but the lack of timely salary payments has made it challenging to afford even necessities for their families. They are not only facing a financial crisis currently, but it seems that the joy of the upcoming Diwali has also been snatched away from them.
One of the sweepers, Kalabai, told Local 18 that she has been working as a sweeper at the district hospital for the past 15-20 years, but the problem of irregular payment of salary has always been constant. She shared that their salaries get delayed every month, and now she does not expect to get her salary on time even during Diwali.
Kalabai stated that 60 other families like hers are also facing the same problem. It has now become difficult for their families to make any special preparations ahead of Diwali, and due to this financial crisis, the families’ happiness has withered.
When the Local 18 team spoke to Pradeep Moses, Civil Surgeon of the District Hospital, on this matter, he said that the reason for the salary delay is the non-receipt of the budget from the government. He said that the salaries of 60 sweepers are pending, and a letter has also been sent to the government in this regard.
The civil surgeon assured that as soon as the budget is received, the salaries of the sweepers will be released so that they can celebrate Diwali happily.
The sweepers said that they have been fulfilling all their duties at the hospital diligently, but when they do not get their salaries on time, it affects their families. Due to this economic crisis, they are neither able to indulge in festive spending nor are they able to buy new clothes or sweets for their children.
They stated that they have been working at the hospital for the last several years in the hope that their wages will be regularised, but they are only left with assurances every time and their problems persist.
