Tamil Nadu Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi Stalin, who hit the headlines over his ‘Sanatan Dharma’ remarks, has stoked a controversy by comparing the film industries in South and North India.

Stalin, an actor-turned-politician, claimed that southern states have a thriving film industry, however, that is not the case with the northern part of the country which is “overshadowed” by the Bollywood films.

He claimed that North India does not have as vibrant a film industry “as ours”.

“The Tamil film industry now generates billions in revenue. Kerala, Telugu, and Kannada cinema are also thriving. But does any language in North India have an industry as vibrant as ours? The answer is a big no,” India Today quoted Stalin as saying at a literature festival in Kozhikode last week.

He said that many northern states “don’t even have their own film industry”.

“Mumbai extensively produces Hindi films now, with Marathi, Bhojpuri, Bihari, Haryanvi, and Gujarati cinema receiving far less attention. Many northern states don’t even have their own film industry,” he said.

BJP reacts to his remark

Tamil Nadu BJP vice president Narayanan Thirupathy lashed out at Stalin over his remarks and dubbed him a “failed actor”.

“Udhayanidhi Stalin is a failed actor, and that is the reason he doesn’t know his immaturity, his inexperience and speaks like that. I challenge him to ask his own people not to take the Hindi version of Tamil films. Can he do that?… He will become a failed politician like a failed actor,” Thirupathy said.
