US President Donald Trump on Thursday held a telephonic call with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and asked him to scale back Israeli attacks in Lebanon to help ensure the success of negotiations, reported NBC News, citing a senior US government official.
Trump’s call came in the backdrop of the fresh attack launched by Israel targeting Lebanon, violating the ceasefire agreement.
Earlier in the day, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian critised Israel for the attack and warned that such actions can trigger Iran to take severe actions against Israel.
Tensions remain high as the fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran faces uncertainty, with Tehran asserting that the agreement also includes a halt to Israeli military actions in Lebanon.
Israel carried out fresh strikes in Lebanon on Thursday, a day after launching its largest attacks of the conflict, which killed over 250 people and left more than 1,000 injured.
However, both Washington and Israel have said the ceasefire does not apply to Hezbollah targets. This difference in interpretation has added to the strain on ongoing diplomatic efforts and raised concerns that the truce could fail.
Amid this, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu reiterated that Israel will continue its military campaign against Hezbollah following a series of deadly strikes in Lebanon.
In a post on X, he said the military is “continuing to strike Hezbollah with force, precision, and determination”.
