US President Donald Trump said during a Reuters interview that “we shouldn’t even have an election,” remarks that prompted the White House on Thursday to later say he was joking amid growing scrutiny of his comments about the upcoming midterms.

Asked by a Reuters reporter why Trump had spoken in recent days about canceling the election, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the president was “simply joking,” according to the interview transcript.

Trump made the remark while discussing historical trends that have seen the party in power lose seats in midterm elections. Expressing frustration that Republicans could lose control of Congress later this year, he said he had achieved so much in office that “when you think of it, we shouldn’t even have an election.”

The comment came during a wide-ranging Reuters interview in which Trump dismissed concerns from voters, business leaders and members of his own party on issues ranging from the economy to foreign policy, repeatedly saying he did not care about criticism.

Trump’s remarks also follow comments he made last week warning Republican lawmakers that he could face impeachment if the party loses its majority in the House of Representatives in November. Speaking at a Republican retreat in Washington, he said Democrats would “find a reason to impeach me” if Republicans failed to retain control of the chamber.

All 435 seats in the US House of Representatives and 33 Senate seats are due to be contested in the midterm elections later this year.
