US President Donald Trump was greeted with loud boos during the opening of the US Open men’s final between Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner, in his first visit to the New York tournament in a decade.
The 79-year-old president, a regular attendee of major sporting events, has not been to the tournament since 2015, when he was booed by fans at the Billie Jean King National Tennis Centre during the Serena vs Venus Williams quarterfinal, amid his 2016 presidential campaign.
Trump faced a mixed reception in the Democrat-leaning New York City as he was greeted with loud boos, along with a few cheers, when he was shown on screen during the match, which was delayed by 30 minutes due to his presence.
The president was joined by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt, and Steve Witkoff, his envoy for peace missions. Major tournament sponsor Rolex welcomed Trump into its stadium box, with the president briefly appearing alongside the company’s CEO.

Broadcasters Urged To Limit Coverage Of Crowd Reactions
Alcaraz romped his way to the US Open 2025 men’s singles title on Monday with his dominant win over Jannik Sinner, with a decisive 6-2, 3-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over the Italian to clinch his sixth Grand Slam title and climb to the top spot in the World Rankings.
However, people watching the clash may not have seen any unfavourable reactions to Trump’s presence, as the United States Tennis Association (USTA) has asked broadcasters to avoid showing any protests or crowd reactions to the president.
According to a USTA memo obtained by The Athletic, Trump will appear on official feeds during the national anthem ceremony but broadcasters were urged to “refrain from showcasing any disruptions or reactions in response to the president’s attendance in any capacity.”
“We regularly ask our broadcasters to refrain from showcasing off-court disruptions,” USTA spokesman Brendan McIntyre confirmed. ESPN, which is televising the final, declined comment but is expected to cover Trump’s presence as it would in other sporting contexts.
Amid Trump’s presence, several tennis fans struggled to enter the venue through tightened security checkpoints. He became the first sitting US president in 25 years to attend the tournament.
Meanwhile, Trump also plans to attend the first day of golf’s Ryder Cup later this month, and preparations are underway for him to host a UFC fight on the White House grounds.
