US President Donald Trump remains optimistic ahead of his highly anticipated meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin this Friday in Anchorage, Alaska. Speaking with reporters on Wednesday, Trump suggested that if the initial summit goes well, he plans to quickly schedule a follow-up meeting that would also include Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“If the first one goes OK, we’ll have a quick second one,” Trump told reporters. While he did not provide a specific timeline for the proposed second summit, the President expressed a desire to act swiftly. “I would like to do it almost immediately, and we’ll have a quick second meeting between President Putin and President Zelenskyy and myself, if they’d like to have me there,” he added.
The Friday meeting marks the first official engagement between a sitting US President and the Russian leader since Trump assumed office for his second term in January this year. Scheduled to take place in Anchorage, the summit will primarily focus on efforts to resolve the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, which has now entered its fourth year with no comprehensive peace deal in sight.
Although expressing hope for progress, Trump also issued a clear warning to Moscow regarding the potential consequences of failure. He made it known that the US expects results from the summit, particularly in terms of reaching an agreement to end hostilities. “Yes, they will,” Trump responded when asked whether Russia would face consequences if no deal was reached.
While the President did not elaborate on the exact nature of the consequences, he hinted there will be severe results.
Trump’s remarks followed a phone conversation with European leaders and President Zelenskyy in the lead-up to the meeting. Describing the call as productive, Trump said, “He was on the call. President Zelenskyy was on the call. I would rate it a 10, very friendly.”
Following that discussion, Trump reiterated his hopes for a swift second summit. “There’s a very good chance that we’re going to have a second meeting, which will be more productive than the first. Because the first is: I’m going to find out where we are and what we’re doing,” he said.
