Transactions through Unified Payments Interface i.e. UPI are limited to small amounts only. According to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) report, transactions worth Rs 1572 lakh crore were made in the country in the first half of 2025 i.e. till June 30.
This is 15% more than last year. Maximum 85% of the transactions were done through UPI, but the share in total transactions (value) was only 9%. During this period, 0.1% transactions were done through RTGS, but the share in total transactions was about 69%.
At the same time, during the festive season in October, the average daily transaction through UPI increased to Rs 96,638 crore, which is 16% more than the 82991 crore transaction in September. According to NPCI, the reason for increase in use of UPI is more use of UPI for purchases on Dussehra and then Diwali.

More than 73 crore transactions every day
According to NPCI, an average of 73.69 crore UPI transactions took place every day between Dhanteras and Diwali this year. During this period last year, there were 56.84 crore transactions daily. If compared with four years ago, this number has increased 3 times. There were 24.54 crore transactions every day in these three days in 2022, which increased to 42.05 crore in 2023.
UPI 85% in digital payments
The share of UPI in all types of digital payments is also increasing in the country. Now it has become 85%. On the eve of Diwali, 74 crore transactions were done through UPI in a single day, which is the highest ever transaction figure in a single day through UPI.
Increase in consumption due to GST 2.0
It is believed that due to reduction in GST tax, UPI transactions have increased. The new tax regime began on 22 September 2025, in which the 12% and 28% tax slabs were removed. Now only 5% and 18% tax slabs are left. People’s purchases have increased due to reduced taxes.
