Indian institutions have a limited presence in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings by Subject 2026, released today, January 21. While the US and UK continue to dominate the global rankings, China is gaining influence in computer science, engineering, and physical sciences, according to THE.
The Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is the only Indian institution ranked under 100 in the Computer Science category, followed by Amity University in the 251-300 range and Jamia Millia Islamia in the 301-400 range. In the Engineering category, IISc has secured rank in the 101-125 range.
Other than IISc, no Indian universities made it to the top 100 in any of the 11 disciplines assessed this year. India also lags behind several Asian counterparts, including China, Singapore, Hong Kong, Japan, and South Korea, in converting research scale into top-tier global subject rankings.
However, India has shown improvements in research output and international collaboration, although these advancements have yet to lead to consistent top-50 or top-20 subject-level performance.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) emerged as the leading institution globally, topping three subject rankings: Arts and Humanities, Business and Economics, and Social Sciences. The US claimed the top position in eight of the 11 subjects, while the UK led in three, including Psychology, where the University of Cambridge reclaimed the top spot for the first time since 2022.
China emerged as the leading Asian nation, securing seven top-10 positions across various subjects, up from four last year. Peking University entered the top 10 in computer science for the first time, while Tsinghua University made its debut in the physical sciences top 10. Asian universities also achieved a milestone in Business and Economics, with Tsinghua University, Peking University, and the National University of Singapore (NUS) making it to the top 10.

The World University Rankings by Subject 2026 follow the same broad methodology as the overall World University Rankings 2026. They use 18 performance indicators across teaching, research, knowledge transfer, and internationalisation. However, the metric weightings and publication and staff thresholds have been adjusted for each subject area to more accurately assess performance at the subject level.
